Hi all, brought a budget fantasea nano strobe (GN12). Thinking it might not really be upto the job beyond a couple of feet.
What would give better results, picking up another nano for £50, or buying a single S&S YS-01.

Would 2x Nanos = GN of 24. Not sure if that would actually be correct... Brighter at close proximity but drop off quicker than a GN20?

Thanks!

Depending on type of photography u prefer, the lower GN, the distance to object is lower to get the perfect light, means suitable for macro shot. With dual strobes, it provides more light from more angles which can prevent problems like shadows of the object. So in the case, gn is still remain 12.

Therefore, if you like to take some photos where it keeps some distance from objct, the higher GN is better, more lights coverage, of course 2 ys-01 is more powerful compare to single. If you have some budget, i will suggest go for 2 ys-01, or 2 nano and go for great macro photography. :)

Two nanos (12 each) give you a guide number of 16.8 (sqrt 2). One YS 01 (or 110a) would be much better.

The sensible solution is really one YS and one nano as the fill flash. The money you spend on a flash is a far better spend than a camera and housing, they don't become obsolete so quickly. A good flash is a joy forever a camera starts to let you down after 3 years when you see the results of newer technology.

The only fly in this story is if they come out with a combined still/video flash that is good at both via a switch. I think many people would buy one of those.

Ikelite now has one the DS161.

Yes IKE has a DS161 but as a video light it is truly pitiful. Better to get a small strobe and a decent video light (Sola, Itorch etc.)

Thanks for all the replies, I'll go for a single ys as I'll be travelling! Didn't think 2 nano (12) could be 24!

Plus nano's angle of coverage is only good for a 35mm lens (35mm equiv). That is 65 deg. That is 1/3 the coverage area of a YS-01's 100 deg coverage. If you put diffuser that will allow for 100 deg coverage, you will probably get 1/3 to 1/4 the power from a Nano, thus the GN for a pair of Nano would be more like 9-12.
