My wife and I both use Werther's Butterscotch hard candies on every dive to prevent dry mouth. Tuck it in between your teeth and cheek toward the back and leave it there. Lasts for an entire 1 hour dive and prevents the dry mouth. Have never had even the slightest problem with aspiration or choking.

I'm not convinced of the safety. You can do things that are unsafe and get away with them. Underwater all kinds of things can go wrong and you may gasp and aspirate the candy. It's just my opinion.

Hi Everyone,

It has been sugested (here & elsewhere) that she gets a metal regulator 2nd stage. The options available in South Africa are the Proton, Abyss & the Sherwood Oasis (not metal but does the job apparently). I am unable to purchase a second stage on it's own in SA (only packaged 1st & 2nd sets) but could get an OCTO instead & use that as a primary second on a cheaper 1st stage (Sherwood Brut available). Any comments on the above regs would be appreciated.

I only saw this post now and see you are kind of sorted, (which is fine) but the guys (local distributors) at Sherwood would certainly have organised you with an Oasis or Blizzard 2nd stage.

Did you call em? They have organised loose 2nd stages for me on many an occassion, they tend to be more expensive than a standard Octo, but thats probably Sherwood USA s priceing structure been passed down.Always been like that.

Usually, they need to import them seperately, takes about two weeks but they have always helped me out.

I would make sure both of you are well hydrated. That is probably the biggest cause of severe dry mouth. It could be that if you are not all that experienced that she is not used to the dry air.

HYDRATE. HYDRATE. HYDRATE.

I had one of the major salivary glands quit working years ago. Candy mints are no solution for folks like me. Hydration is healthy, but no help, either. After a couple of dry mouth years with the plastic regulator, I went back to a metal second stage. I got the Proton. The situation was greatly improved.

Have fun with it.

You may want to get into Nitrox diving. It extends your bottom time and for the most part elimates Dry mouth.
