Thanks, that would be very helpful.

It's DIR because after doing longer dives and sitting on deco (especially in the overhead) there isn't a lot of room to move around and stay warm, so yes, you blow more air into the suit.

...

I've got a longer dive coming up and the last time I did deco at this spot I got a bit chilly. I'd like to have a way to add more gas to the suit for my deco.

1) why not just wear 2-4 pounds more weight on a V-weight or tail weight? seems a bit simpler (to me)
2) What is "DIR" may well change if you have 20+ support divers coming down to help you change into/out of harnesses, provide weights and help in emergencies etc. compared to most of us conducting dives on our own ...

If you are cold now... Would you be able to vent even more suit gas and stay down to complete your deco (without the weights) if you lost all your backgas gas?

You might be too light for this possibility and if so should be adding weight - not drop weights which could be stolen or moved, etc.

1. V-Weights put the weight in the wrong place for me. I went to a kydex plate precisely to avoid having weight up high. I am already using a tailweight and can't quite put the amount of weight there I need to. Believe me, I've tried! Even tried to get Tobin to modify his tailweight pouch to accommodate.

2. Quite true. And for this dive, there will be support. Not 20+ like in the WKPP, but a couple of guys to help with stage tanks, weights, and so forth. It's going to be a fun project. I've just never done more than 2 hours on a single dive, and I know I get a bit chilly in the water after 90 minutes or so. But that said, I don't see how inquiring about a few drop weights gets me compared to an exploration team exploring miles back in a cave. If the mods feel this discussion is best moved out of the DIR area, then that's fine.

I've run my backgas down to about 1000psi while carrying a single stage. I did not have any trouble with being too light.

I'm planning to use the dropweights for convenience sake, not because I "need" them.

i just ziptie a boltsnap to a 5# weight and clip it off in my pocket. use is entirely for support diving when i know i'm going to be picking up buoquets of 3+ drained stages on a leash and stuff like that... i've never considered how to make it more DIR, but i'm also not facing a deco obligation when i'm using one, so i've never been terribly concerned about it...

Good stuff Lamont. Thanks.

You might consider something a little heftier than cave line. More like the cord used for stage/deco bottles (~4mm ~pencil sized). Less likely to abrade on the lead brick.

I'd use 1 inch webbing and sew it together.

I'd avoid tapping lead with conventional machine screw threads, to easy to strip or pull out.

If I had a need to threads in lead I would consider using a course threaded sheet metal screw.

The screw bit was my dumb idea. I think Perrone is just using conventional bricks with moulded belt slots.
