A diver who went missing off the coast of Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Province, was rescued seven hours later after being found drifting on a broken surfboard, police said Saturday.

The Sokcho Coast Guard received a report at 1:30 p.m. that a man in his 50s had not surfaced while diving about one kilometer east of Dongsan Port in Yangyang-gun.

The missing man had been participating in recreational diving with five others, but he was the only one who failed to return to shore.

The Coast Guard deployed four patrol vessels, an aircraft, three private drone search teams and four private divers but was unable to locate him.

About seven hours later, the diver was found drifting on a broken surfboard in the waters near Jo Island, about six kilometers away from where went missing. The man was suffering from hypothermia but was not in life-threatening condition, authorities said.
