Being able to set the white balance will help, but it won't completely make up for the colours lost due to filtration in the water. A good wide angle lens will help a lot - if you can manage the vignetting. Personally, I don't think anything can beat having a strobe for shooting critters.
 
Using the FT2 inside the Panasonic housing will let you play with a good small strobe (Inon s2000 for example) and let you get some really cool pics. On the other hand, getting a small video light and primarily shooting video with the odd pic will probably let you capture your memories a whole lot easier.
