DPV/Sea Scooter problems anyone?

I'm not too sure if this is the right section to post this, but I'm having some real issues trying to think of improvements for a sea scooter. The reason I'm asking is because for a school project, I've decided to build a product related to underwater transportation.

Our co-coordinator says that the product has to solve a problem people have, and that isn’t already available on the market. For instance, sea scooters reduce diver fatigue and allow more distance to be covered. However, there are sea scooters on the market that already do this, so I can't use it as an excuse to build one.

One reason I’ve thought of is building a scooter with an integrated computer that controls the ascent rate. If it ascends too fast, the motor cuts off or slows down. This is just an idea though, so suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)
 
Not sure how useful it might be but...
How about a scooter with bow thrusters for turning? Probably unmarketable but kinda cool to imagine.
 
Or something very low tech. A crotch strap that doesn't give you an ultimate wedgie and crush the boys when using a scooter. :)

Done! Currently in testing by a few folks and soon to be released. It works with back mount and most side mount rigs and there are no extra clips needed to keep the boys "decompressed". Connects to the waist strap in front, like a standard crotch strap. Pictures coming soon...

I would not buy that kind of scooter :) Do not fall into the trap of creating a "feature that is protecting the diver" Most of those things that I have seen are garbage and

Weight/burn time seems to be the major problem. As always you want unlimited run time in a weightless scooter that you can put into your dry suit pocket :) I'm not sure how a development of a portable nuclear reactor is aligning with your school project though :)

That's one of the ideas I had in mind as well! But I think the lecturers will think its a bit too simple for this project :(

I have always wondered why scooters don't have counter rotating props like a torpedo. From what I understand this will eleviate tourque and increase the efficiency.

I had a look at what that was, and I think its because the extra efficiency and torque it produces wouldn't outweigh the negative, which is additional weight.

After having my hair turn grey from trying to figure out what the heck I was going to do, my supervisor gave a brilliant suggestion (well, I think it is anyway :wink:)

What do you guys think of a DPV that uses waterjet propulsion as opposed to trolling motors?

Yes!!! Weight: burn time/ maneuverability is probably one of the biggest most divers look at. Then again there is the SS Minnus.
 
Why not mimic some military application? Silent propulsion system and the ability to fire small torpedos? Equip the scooter with a rebreather too.

Of course the unit would have to be able to self-destruct after mission.

That said - they probably have something like this in the works already?
