I have an Oly C-5060 and am trying to download pictures taken in the RAW format. The Camedia software doesn't recognize this. I cannot open it with Photoshop CS or any other program either. The file extension on these pix is .THM Does anyone know how I can open these? I downloaded the card directly onto my printer which linked to my computer. I can use a USB directly from the camera if need be.

All my 5050 RAW files have ORF extensions.

I changed the extension name but the picture is all pixilated. (Is that a word?) It shows up in large block pixels. Hmm..you would think Olympus software would easily transfer their own cameras pictures. I'll keep at it. Thanks Dee!

Hmmm...I have the Oly 5050 so would think the 5060 would be similar. Here's what I do...don't know if it will help.

The THM file is the jpeg thumbnail attached to the ORF. There is a download so you can see these thumbnails in windoze explorer - a search should find the details.

In CS, open the Browse feature from the File menu. This will show all files - jpegs if you have them OR the ORF file (it doesn't display the THM file). double click any ORF file and it will open in the ACR. JPEGs, PSDs etc open straight into CS

This assumes that you have downloaded from your card to your hard drive. I would NOT change the file extension at this step. Originals should always be just that, originals. You can always save them as something else as copies, but never fiddle with the originals.

IMHO.

Where would I search for this download? I've associated the THM files to the Windows Picture Viewer but that only gets me the WPV icon.

Do you have to keep the THM files? Since I can see the ORF files in the PS7 browser, there doesn't seem to be much reason to keep them. Granted, each one is only about 8K, that will add up eventually!

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately it doesn't work with mine. It downloaded all the RAW pictures and put them in a file folder named SMALL. It has all the pictures in .THM format and the size is 5kb or 6kb. I'll keep searching until I figure it out. Thanks again!

OK...for some reason those are NOT the original RAW files. It sounds like they have been separated somehow...I did that recently and couldn't get them to match up again so tossed the thumbnails.

When you download your card, you are getting ORF files, yes?

When your camera takes a picture in RAW it generates 2 files: a .THM file which is a thumbnail of the actual RAW image. The other file is a .ORF (Olympus RAW File) which is the actual RAW image. This .ORF file is what you need to copy across to your computer's hard drive and open with Camedia Master or Photoshop CS.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, perhaps that's where the problem lies. Forget this process and just connect your camera directly to your computer via a USB cable and copy the files across and see how you go. If this doesn't work then can you tell us what operating system you are using? Windows XP? MAC OS X? We could then give you step by step instructions on how to open RAW files on your computer.

Thanks for weighing in here, ReyeR - I thought I was on the right track. Totally missed the part about direct to printer.

That would be my guess for the problem too - I assumed he was going from the card to the hard drive to the application. Some printers will only print a jpeg image from the camera - so the only jpeg is that teeny one, thus the pixellation.

You'll need to save to your hard drive then open the ORF in PSCS. Save AS some lossless format (I use PSD) work on the image, save your changes (I do another Save As) then print. Your printer may or may not recognize the new file type so you may have to convert the lossless into jpeg (I'd keep my lossless and just make a new folder like TO Print with the jpeg image).

Let us know...
