They will take getting use to especially after breathing a single hose regulator. In my case there was no choice the Double hose was all that was available when I started diving. They are great and safe regulators. And the people hve put a lot of time into Improvements. Get one and give it a little time and you will get to like it. Time for me to just drift

I,. I congratulate you on 5000 plus dives --it is a life time of diving but can be accomplished . As you have no doubt noticed there are many posters on this board who live in the snow bound hinterlands have been diving for 3 years on summer vacations and do not log dives, yet according to their info page have astronomical number of dives listed
Sir, I suspect that you are one who truly has made 5000 recorded dives

2, I do not know your dive history but a little single hose diving regulator genealogy seems appropriate
:
1956 Rose Pro standard -several models introduced - ceases production in 1960
1957 US Diver (French Made) Aquamatic
1959 Sportsways Waterlung ( with bright red hoses-- interesting )
1960 Healthways SCUBAIR series introduced ( a number of models)
1961 US Diver Calypso -- this was the regulator used on Keller's 1000 foot dive at Catalina
(and there are several others I have omitted as being late bloomers into the market place )

During that period and even before there was considerable experimentation to develop a simple reliable bullet proof singe hose regulator generally based on a welding regulator as the first stage. In SoCal ER Cross developed and dived a single hose regulator in 1951 but never placed in on the market. In then isolated Australia a gentleman developed a single hose regulator the "Porpoise" which was marketed for several years-- well up into the 1960s

For a number of years apparently the US Navy and numerous training organization shied away from the single hose regulator for a variety of reasons - some personal some technical ..........

Therefore I strongly suspect you did not dive or even made aware of the single hose regulator in your USN training

Since it is Veteran's Day 2016 I salute you for your service to our country The United States of America

Pensacola ?? there is a large shop in your town on a major highway that we visited several summers ago-- Had a very knowledgeable female NAUI instructor who showed Betty and I around the shop.....Very Impressive ..I sent her a care package of information ---Per sir Robert "A promise made is a debt unpaid ..." sdm
You didn't mention the Poseidon Cyklon from somewhere around 1956-1958. They still make it, the same model. I believe it's the only unbalanced diaphragm model available that can be purchased new.

Thanks Sam, Actually it's more than 9000 now and I started snorkeling in 65 at 10. Didn't start logging until 1955 just before going to Dive school in DC. Not much of a log each line is a dive. Went yesterday made two more and heading out in an hour to go kill some Flounder. Thank you also for your service Sir. Dive Pros is on Highway 98 across from the Navy hospital. CJ is the friendly Lady there at this time. Here's a snap shot of my crude one line per dive dive logs. there's 5 of those books full of dives.

I will for your benefit list a few others
* Northhill Air Mite
* Dacor Dart

And of course some foreign units;
* The Spiro Aquilons (the regulators which the Calypso & the Conshelf were based)
* The Russian Delphins
etc etc...

Hope you agree ---if not my world will be shattered

Now on to more important responses

Maximum depth for me was a mild 134. Smooth as butter. This not being a vintage thread, thanks for the history lesson, all very quaint, but history is made in the present and the Kraken trumps all.

9000 fantastic ! Keep on recording your dives. For your records and for the future. Your generation is the first generation of man who has been exposed to frequent and prolonged hyperbaric conditions. Who know at this time what the future will bring . Possible Pandemic aseptic bone necrosis ? or some other unknown at this time affliction?

There is another reason for logging your dives-- The prestigious "SSI Platinum Pro 5000 Award" The applicant must have 5000 or more recorded dives and the recommendation of two Pro 5000 recipients . I have had mine since it was established and Son Sam IV has had his for about 10 years One of three father and son recipients in the world . You certainly qualify and if accepted will bring even more prestige to the organization

Finally if you ever become twisted a dive log is invaluable for DX & RX.

Son Sam IV is an ER & Hyperbaric Doc...We have discussed diver DX & RX on numerous occasions. Admitted patients have no answers -- if conscious their responses are always "I don't know" And Sam IV and attending's are supposed to be mind readers.

FYI I have posted some where earlier but a little Dive Log History
The first Dive log was created by the late Dick Bonin (founder of SCUBA pro) in 1955 while he was employed at the long gone company "Dive Master" in his home city of Chicago
Credit for the second dive log and the template for NAUI & PADI's Dive log was in 1967 and goes to Tom Ebro (LA Co UW Instructor) for the LA County UIA 3 months long ADP & 3 months long UICC. That was the beginning of civilian logging their dives "official" books.

Please--The next time you visit Dive Pros do several things for me:
1) A big California HUG for CJ--She is indeed a rare one !
2) CJ is a NAUI instructor ask to see the latest NAUI News I am told there is an article in it about me
3) Upstairs out side of the class rooms ins a pair of gum rubber Ducks -- Check the address it will be either Laguna Beach or Huntington Beach California --please advise

Like the sands of time through an hour glass these are the days of our dives....

Sam you are from California look up Charlie Mack GM-1. he is a black UDT shipmate we were stationed together in Panama City 67-69. We were dive partners and went on a couple projects together. His physical fitness inspired me and changed my outlook on life. Sure would like to at least hear from or about his whereabouts. PM me anyone reading this with information.
I have been bent twice and now limit my dives to 90 feet 32% nitrox that I mix here at shop with 24% plugged into computer. I never get close to deco. if the computer ever quits I will just wing it. The only bad results from getting bent was nerves damaged in lower digestive track. The treating physician told me that would happen and he was correct. The other time was in the Navy while inside chamber tender on the USS Skylark when Miller and Sprinkle were killed.
I will message CJ and give her this link for some thing to read when she goes in for work at noon. Mon and Fri she is off. I ran charters for Dive Pros for about 15 years the Gulf Rogue was the boat, Long gone.Enough BS look at the full Moon. Sea life does weird things with a full moon.

I think single hose regulators became more popular with the diving public in the late 60's cuz they were cheap.

I've been diving a 1967 US Divers Royal Aquamaster with Phoenix, HPR and DBE almost exclusively for 4 years and the advantages far outweigh the initial output in cash for the upgrades. A good running and set up double hose feels much more natural than a single hose during the dive.No weight to hold on to with my teeth and no bubbles in my face or past my ears. . If you insist on a single hose regulator, you would like a Conshelf 14 or a MK5 plus 108 or 109.

I went out on a limb a few weeks ago and bought a new Scubapro MK 25 + G260 just to add a "top of the line" modern single hose - - what a piece of crap. Scubapro should be ashamed of themselves for charging 800.00 bucks for that kiddie toy. I've got a 62 Voit Avalon (original MSRP - $34.95) that I like better than that. Embarrassingly bad regulator from Scubapro but I'm probably just spoiled from the doublehose.

I would get a Kraken and call it a day if I were you. Save your money in the long run. Just my .02
