a couple more:
My own little first aid kit...bandages and such

a sewing kit is helpful and a tweezer too

Also a photocopy of the front and back of the credit cards that I am taking with on the trip - stored separately (so convenient that the number you have to call if lost or stolen is on the back of the card).

Depending if and how many postcards I plan to send I write or print address lables of the people that I want to send cards to so I just have to stick it on the card.

I also do a significant amount of business travel and I second Doc Intrepid's recommendation of the Bose Sound Cancelling headphones. They help in relieving stress and give you great sound. A mini DVD player and or computer also is a great travel aid.

Well, I shoudn't tell you this but........Since I usually have to travel close to 40 hours to get to my yearly spot in PNG, I use a diazepam to help sleep a lot of the way. Since I never use it except to get to PNG, my resistance is really low. One pill just about gets me the whole way there. Otherwise, my legs would be hopping and jerking the whole way there.

For flying: I bring my Gameboy. And lots of games. A book is nice to have as well.
And a bag of my favorite chips.

At your destination: A few large zip lock bags are always handly.

I second the message about plastic bags - I bring ziplocks, garbage bags (great if all of your gear hasn't dried), and even grocery bags for odds and ends. I also always travel with my laundry bag - it's nice to be able to separate the "dirties"!

Great suggestions - I made a list of them. I also get an Rx from my Doctor for an antibiotic and antibiotic ear drops especially if I'm doing a live aboard trip. Can't imagine anything much worse than that far out and being sick/swimmer's ear.

Ditto on the DVD player. Brought one on the family trip (3 adults, 1 toddler) to Belize and it saved my sanity on both the flights and the trip. In fact, the kids behind us on the flight were watching over our shoulders and the parents had this blissful look on their faces.

Books and more books. I always ran out of good reading material half way to three quarters through the trip and books are not a easy find in many areas (Belize, Bahamas) or are really expensive (Australia - where they can be over double what we would pay here). The ubiquitous Harlequin romance novels just don't cut it.

My wife and I pick about 50 mp3 songs and load them up. We pack a small set of pc speakers so we can have music when we want it.

My wife would also like to take here pillow(s) but some time that is too much of a hassle. So we bring our own pillow cases. It makes us feel a little better about sleeping on pillows that millions of people have drooled on.
