What resort are you staying at? I just got my open water certification at the Paradisus Palma Real resort in late October. Most of the resorts in that immediate area were diving just off shore literally within a half mile or less. Sometimes they would go a little farther if the water was calm but I didn't make one of those trips.

The diving in Punta Cana is good but not great. There is a wreck (The Astran) near the Iberostar. The reefs are patchy but I did see some nurse sharks and big green morays when I was there last January.

The best diving (and it is really good) is on the south coast at the village of Bayahibe. The reefs are much healthier and there is a great wall dive at Catalina Island. It's about a 90 miute drive from Punta Cana but all the hotels offer full day excursions. It's definitely worth the bus ride for some very good diving.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Depends who you are diving with. Our last trip we did all-inclusive with Paradisus Punta Cana (Scuba Caribe) and they pretty much stay close by to whichever patch reefs are offshore. Not spectacular diving my any stretch, but great viz and water temps are wonderful. If you can get over to the underwaer reserve near Santo Domingo there are some nice wrecks (Hickory and Limon Wrecks). Even though the diving is not world class we had a great trip and would go back in a heartbeat. If you need any gear for your trip, or looking for some unique Christmas gift ideas be sure to check out our site: Scuba diving books and apparel just list some scuba related Christmas ornaments which are pretty cool. Have fun!
