As promised I am writing a trip report. Hope it is informative, not too boring and I will apologize now if it is lengthy. I tend to like to share as much as I can.

Friday 6/9/06: After work, I had some last minute errands to finish getting ready to travel. Our plans were to all meet at a local Mexican Restaurant(the owner went on the trip with us, she was in my basic certification class, but that is another story). We met at 7:30pm for dinner and to load our luggage and dive gear into a trailer being pulled to Charlotte in the morning. Charlotte is a 2 1/2 hour drive from home for us. Plan was to meet up share rides to Charlotte.

Sat. 6/10/06 3am Alarm goes off, yuck I did not sleep well. Tossed and turned, kept trying to think of how I could make my carry on less heavy. Never came up with any ideas. Rolled out and took a shower, made coffee and got ready to pack up my carry on's in the car. Something made me stop and look at the mail that had been put on the counter. An envelope from DAN caught my eye, I knew my dive insurance was ok as I had just renewed it and had the new cards. I opened it and much to my dislike found my dive gear insurance had expired, I really don't recall getting a reminder. Oh, well couldn't call and did not have time to get online as it was now 4 am and I had to be to the house of our trip leader in 15 minutes, I rode with their family.

We left at 4:40 am to meet up with the other cars that were all caravaning together with us. 5:30am finally we are on the interstate, everyone is excited and talking the whole way. Time flew by and before we knew it we were at the airport. Now the fun, unload the luggage and gear, check in. I had my two bags piggybacked and strapped together, made it easy to pull through the lines. Lines were really long too! So long at the international check in for US Airways that they split us and sent half of us to the domestic counter. Big problem, there they were tryhing to check us in as to Antiqua and then we would have to re-check there to Dominica. Problems, only a 45 min lay over which they said was a minimum one and we would not have time to clear customs, immigration and make the flight. I was told to be firm that I had to be checked all the way to Dominica, and after about 35 min of being persisitant and a PIA to the agent we finally got it. Ok, things are looking better. We went off to have breakfast and wait to board. The flight to Antiqua was good, they gave all the group free headsets for all the problems we had getting our bags checked.

Antiqua, man it was warm, hot is not even a good discription. We had our own escort through customs and immigrations, did not seem to be any real problems. Boarded the Carbbian Star, and began sweating, it was really warm on that plane. We were about to get going and the pilot came over the intercom and said we were delayed because they had detected a problem with the hydrolic system. Not a good thing! Even with the doors open it was hotter than a sauna, meanwhile they worked on the left side hydrolic area on the prop and wing. LOL, the maintenance crew finally sprayed WD40 on the areas and whalla we were ready to go. I was still nervous, I prayed the whole 35min flight and little did we know that some of our luggage and gear was taken off during that time due to a weight problem. So, when arriving in Dominica and making our baggage claims there were about half of our group missing either all or part of their baggage.

Vans were there and ready to load us up to take to Ft. Young Hotel. We had 5 vans, in all one carried just baggage. The 2 hour ride was fun for the first hour, and then as it got dark it became long, winding, bumpy, HUNGRY, thirsty etc. The hotel was ready for us though, took us into the conference room for an orientation, Rum Punch!! and check in. Ken from the dive shop rearranged our dive time Sunday for 1pm to allow time for those without gear to get it on later flights. Sonja from the activities desk served us RUM PUNCH, was helpful with all kind of things like getting us extra keys. She had the restaurant manager bring us menus, take food orders so we would not have to wait once through check in.

Dinner was very good, steak or chicken. I had steak and 3 rum punches. Went to my room and crashed. All of my baggage made it, so I was set and could even sleep in!

See next thread for Day 1 dives.

Sunday Morning up and had breakfast at 8:30 am. Felt very rested and ready to go. We were meeting at 11 for land tour information and more on the dive plans.

Oh, I forgot to mention, our room was 101 a Delux Oceanfront room and the one right next to the Dive shop. How convienent. I loved it!

By noon everyone had all their baggage and gear. We met at the dive shop and began to set up our boats, we had two with the Dive Dominica crew. First dive was at Witches Drop Off. Water temp 82, viz was not as good as I had hoped, about 50ft with alot of sediment. I did get a couple of pictures on this dive, an eel and turtle. But, I had to be really more concerned with my buddy and room mate. I did not know her before this trip, and luck would have it she had only made 7 dives since certification 2 yrs ago. She had some bouyancy probs, and sucked down her air in 20 minutes, to 1000, we let the dive master know but she was getting panicky about it and one of the men in our group that is a dive guide swapped his buddy with me and he took her back to the boat. She was a nervous wreck he said, and wanted to know where I was. They all told her I was fine and would come up with the others when our air was down half or when the divemaster told us to surface.

Dive 2: I didn't catch the name of this site, but I swear they called it Swiss Cheese! Somehow I don't think that is right though. Another beautiful reef though, with swim throughs and again she ran low on air, I noticed that she went too deep and called her up some. She tended to be playing with her air inflator alot, also using hands in swimming motion. Made a mental note to talk to her later. My camera was fogged and no pictures from this dive.

I am going to attach the slide show, and hopefully it will work. Day 2 dives again all were really good. Usually, first dive was 100 to 80 ft for one hour, second dive 50 ft for one hour max. Water viz was much better day 2 through the last day. Water temps stayed in the 80's. Everyday we saw seahorses and be warned there are bristtle worms everywhere, do not touch them!

I was stung by jellyfish the fist day on my safety stop, I couldn't see them, but I sure felt it. Vinegar and hydrocortosone cream took care of it fast.

Soem divers wore only their bathing suits, I wore a 1mm full suit, some wore lycra and others wore 3mm. I never was over heated though.

There were minimal to no currents, lots of small marine life and very few large fish. The reef system is in pristine conditions and I hope it stays that way.

Our trip home was equally as difficult, but we made it safe and sound. Ok, I am done and will try to attach the slideshow. Please forgive some of them as I had problems with my external strobe.

Guess I will have to get back with those pics can't get them to download here. New program for me so I need to work with it a bit and get it going. But I will post them.

Hi There,
I just got back from Dominica dive vacation too! We met a big group staying at Fort Young, so it must have been your group! They lost our luggage too, but for 2 days! Luckily I carried on my reg, wet suit, bathing suit and mask so I just needed to rent BCD & fins. I would strongly recommend if going to Dominica to bring important things in carry on as they usually have problems with luggage. The diving was great but the visibility was limited. I am working on my photos to be posted on my web site within a few days. :)

Christine,
Which hotel were you staying at? I remember some others we met that were divers that were staying at another hotel. I didn't talk to anyone, but saw some of the others in my group talking to a couple of folks.

We had some viz on a couple of dives that were not very good, atleast not what I expected it to be. But, it sure was better than our lake or river, even at the worst in Dominica it was better than some I have been in even at West Palm Beach.

I have my pics downloaded on MyGallery with the Adobe Photo shop, KodakPhotoGallery. But, the only way I have found to share them is by sending an invite individually by e-mail. I can do a blanket or group e-mail invite, but I must have the personal e-mails to add to my guest lists.

If I can find a way to circumvent this I certainly will. I may need to set up a website that might make it easier.

I did carry on my reg, computer and camera gear. I believe most everyone in our group did do that much, but they still were without BC, fins, etc only for one morning.
I just found out last night that there are still about 4 people that have not got all their luggage yet! Luggage was still in Antiqua for the last week! They expect it in today, or so they have been told. Glad that was not mine, I would have been really p...... you know off!

They really need to work on better baggage handling in Antiqua and Dominica. I think they have more people coming through than they are used to handling. Not geared up for all of those divers as well as the other ususal travelers.

Also, I don't know if you ate at any local restaurants, but most of those are not made for any more than 30-40 customers at a time. So, plan wisely when eating local in Dominica. Three places I recommend though are the Creole, the Guayvere and the Green Flash.

So anyone going there soon have fun!

Cindy,
I have a couple of questions @ Fort Young.
Do you know if there are any laundry facilities for guest use?
Do you know @ phone service to states?
Did you or anyone in group have any must do hikes?
Thanks

Hi Cindy,
We stayed at the Evergreen Hotel and it was very nice. The people were super nice and it was very convenient being right next door to the dive shop. It is very small but that is what we were looking for. The only problem we had there was it took a while to get our meals. Sometimes for breakfast it took almost an hour and we had to really rush to make our dives! We ate at the Green Flash too and really liked it! I can't believe people still haven't gotten their luggage! I would love to see your photos!

To OHDO2 - my husband and son did the activity park - its with Wacky Rollers and its challanging, like an obsticle course. You "zip" fast down a rope, walk on moving logs....So if you are into something like that we would recommend it. We also did the tubing through Wacky Rollers too, it was fun! Didn't get to do any hiking as the weather was pretty bad during the time we were planning on doing that so we ended up going for 3 days up to Portsmouth - its Northeast. We stayed at the Portsmouth hotel - actually cottages right next door. It was excellent, right on the beach. It was a great way to end the vacation.

Yes, we did several of the different day tirps.

We took the Trafalgar Falls and the Tito Gorge together on Monday after diving. That was a must do in my opinion. The hiking there was easy at the gorge, swim into the cavern to the falls was awesome, the water was extremely cold at first but well worth it once into it. We left there and went to the Trafalgar Falls, this was a more moderate hike, with several rocks to climb over, through etc. On all of the excursions our guides were with a man named Klemmy, he was very good. If you are at Ft. Young talk to either Sonja or Ursla at the activities desk they will help you.

We also took the Indian River boat trip, nice boat ride and scenery. Rather bland and non-exertional activity. But, the scenery and views were awesome.

Several in our group went on the Wacky Rollers excursion and about 6-8 went on the Boiling Lake hike the last day. It is a 6 hour hike, very strenuous climbing and must be done with a guide. They were really exhausted when the returned and sore from it.
Need to be in really good physical shape for that one.

I would say though that the Trafalgar Falls is a must do!
