I have an Aqualung lx supreme reg and a crappy slim line occy. I'm not really happy with the occy as it's performance is not great and it free flows quite badly. A friend of mine has a spare occy that she does not use and offered it to me. It is also Aqualung brand however it is not the legend series it's a calipso one. Would this still be ok to use with my reg or must I purchase a legend one. Thanks in advance :).

Ok I thought as much, I asked the guy at the dive store and he said something about different working pressures. I can understand how it may differ between brands, but thought it shouldn't make too much difference if it's just a diferent series under the same brand. I will get it checked out and installed by the techs. :) thanks!!

You don't mention if it is the legend LX or the Titan LX
I own two sets of Legend LX regs, one is a spare.
My prime set has the Legend Occy, and breaths like a dream,
My spare has a Aqualung ABS Occy and sucks hard.

Personally I like the Calypso, could not see a problem.

Sorry, I did leave that out! I have the legend. It currently has the abs on it. I agree with you completly it does suck hard! It's horrid so I wanted to change it.

You can use pretty much any decent 2nd stage as an octopus. Ideally it should be inspected and "tuned" to match the intermediate pressure (IP) of your first stage (this was probably what the tech was talking about). Some techs are lazy, and if it is the same brand they know that it will probably be "close enough" as it comes from the factory... so they'll inspect it, install it, and if it doesn't leak and doesn't breath like a total dog call it "good enough for an octo".... but really every 2nd stage should at least be tested for "cracking" effort when it is matched with a new first stage, and tuned as needed to get it performing optimally with that first stage's IP (just my personal opinion).

Short answer: Yes, the Calypso should be just fine :D

Best wishes.

Andyblue,

If your existing alternate "performs badly" (breathes hard?) and free flows easily it is probably also in need of service. Those 2 problems are in something of a conflict.

As for the replacement , as mentioned it should be tested and will probably need to be adjusted to play nice with your 1st stage. Other than that, mixing and matching Al units is no problem. I think the only conflicts may be if Poseidon is involved.

Pete

Ok thanks pete, the occy has only a few dives on it, it was really cheap. I'm going to retire it anyway. The calypso occy that I'm being given is pretty much new. Only 5 dives on it. I will still get it serviced and tuned though.

For what it is worth, the Aqualung manual cites "If you are using a first stage in the Legend series or a Kronos Supreme, you are recommended to use an pneumatically balanced Octopus (LX Octopus, Legend Octopus, Kronos Octopus, Mikron Octopus) to avoid the possibility of a free flow at depth.
