I will go with no.
Anyplace it will wear through, the wear will just keep it polished and clean.

Do aluminum backplates need to be re-coated after a time? Is it worth it for more consistent use?
Probably not if the backplate is made of a properly chosen alloy of aluminum. Exercise reasonable care with use in saltwater, just give it a freshwater rinse when done then dry. Avoid long periods of contact with moisture.

My AL plate is over 15 years old. The first 5 years of its life, I was a dive guide so in the ocean 5 days a week, with marginal rinsing. I have a bit of corrosion around the nut holes, but no significant rounding out yet, and I've had plenty of dissimilar metal contact (stainless bolts, crappy washers, non-stainless bolts, etc). It's as functional as the day I bought it.

If you want it to be pretty, just spray paint the thing every time you want to change colors and don't worry about it.

What coating? Most plates are 6061 aluminum and need no coating and are left bare. If they were anodized then yes the anodizing can wear and if they are powder coated then yes the powder coating can wear.
