A recent thread in the New Divers/Beginners section made me think about a recent issue I had on my last family vacation. Long story short the all inclusive resort we stayed at in Turks & Caicos had scuba as an included activity. There were about 3 boats that went out in the mornings for 2 tanks dives. One rather obnoxious family from Texas during the surface interval brought out a Bluetooth speaker and just blasted music. I found it rather annoying since their choice of music was country. I really, really don't care for country music. Luckily I had ear buds for my iPhone and tried to drown out the speaker with moderate success.

I realize others may not like my choice of music either but at least I don't subject everyone on the boat to what's on my play list. I just thought it was very inconsiderate. I'm on vacation too.

I'd have bitched to management. Then told the rednecks I am on vacation to relax in peace and quiet.

Listen to the ocean, not your iPod.

If only. The whole point is that that's impossible to do when someone else has chosen to blast music at too high a volume for anyone to ignore or escape. I've had this happen on liveaboard trips and it always puzzles me how those who are inclined to do it seem to have no insight about how their choices are affecting everyone else.

One group was at least socially aware enough to ask what music everyone wanted. I immediately piped up, "Ocean sounds!" which got a loud and appreciative laugh from a nearby like-minded soul. The message was not received by those for whom it was intended, as is usually the case, and the whole week--which could have been blissfully peaceful during surface intervals--was like being at a loud bar.

At least they couldn't take their music along on dives, so for four hours a day and for a brief period in the middle of each night, it was nice.

That generally doesn't work (I've tried it every time) because they quickly respond that they are on vacation too, and this is how they want to spend it. Boat crew tries to stay out of it because no matter what they do, they're going to make some paying customers unhappy. I guess they figure it's the lesser of evils to let the paying customers make each other unhappy instead.

Try to sing along. Since you don't know the words, you'll be repeating what you just heard. And do so loudly. ;)

Seriously, it baffles me that courtesy and common sense are lacking with some people.

Personally, I like to quietly chat with other divers who are interested in having a conversation, away from those who want peace and quiet. The waves lapping are all the noise I need.

No music or any sound recordings should be played -- on a dive boat or in any public location (with a few exceptions, such as the obvious like Bourbon Street, circuses, establishments that you voluntarily enter such as restaurants, ballparks, bars, etc.). Dive boats don't fit that category. When we took our school bands bus touring that was the policy--no cassette tapes to give the bus driver to play. No arguments over types of music. Plenty of (back in the day) walkmans. "But we all (the 6 of us out of 30) want to listen to the same song"! Sorry, no dice. Only makes sense. I don't much care for country either, which is totally irrelevant.

Addendum: Of course if the Dive Charter advertises the trip as one including country music, that's fine--you have the choice not to go. If it doesn't advertise that, I would complain to the dive op/resort, etc. Much the same as the "smoking on a dive boat" thread in The Pub or Thumbs Down, which perhaps is where this should be. Such things should be asked about (in the smoking case) or told about well in advance of signing up for a trip-especially if the dive boat trips are part of an extended vacation far afield.

I am sorry to hear about your rude dive boat companions but I would like to ask how you liked the diving at the Beaches Resort on Provo?

It's like food, I try to appreciate the foods I don't like from time to time just as I do music. I don't like rap, but I try to like it anyways. It expands my horizons.

I think I would have had a tragic accident moving the camera bucket.

Or I'd thumb a dive and then it would somehow be impossible to find the speaker later. I'd even help.

I'm from the Midwest but reside on texas. . I happen to like country, but if it had been something I disliked I would equally be annoyed. No matter where you come from it does not excuse lack of mannors. I will say to you, "Consider your self the better man.
