I do a lot of boat dives and I don't know when I last saw anyone else give the okay sign either when entering the water or after ascending back to the top. Am I the only one who does it?

I do. I never paid any attention to anyone else to see if they do or not. I think it is assumed that you are ok but it also isnt hard to signal either.

Not only do I give the ok sign on boat dives, I will give the ok sign on ascent of a shore dive if I happen to ascend in a slightly different place from my buddy or if I don't want to yell over the water on a night dive and wake up those waterfront home owners.

After a weekend of diving, I'm known for giving the ok signal (either the one with the hand on the head or just the hand one) all the time. Teacher looks at me funny, touch hand to head like a monkey. Atleast, that's how she looks at is, as far as I'm concernced, I'm letting her know I'm fine. It's like, I get so used to having a reg in my mouth, I forget i can talk without losing my air supply :)

Always.

I do. Both when entering the water, and when I surface and wait for the dive boat to come pick me up. I also see other people do it. I think it is common courtesy to the dive master / captain who is looking out for us.

yup.

jeff does it the other way.

I think the reference is to the boat saying ok after initial entry and ascent im sure he checks his buddy for the ok also.

I always throw an OK.

I was on a charter where the Captain freaked out cuz 5 out of 6 divers didn't give him an OK (yes, I was the only one). It was a drift dive, and some of the divers were snorkeling after their ascent to catch a glimpse of some eagle rays. They never gave him an OK, and essentially made it hell for him to get everyone on board.

He freaked hard, threatened to the Owner (also our DM) that he was gonna quit right then and there. That was it for drifts on that trip. I think he has anger issues. :)
