Nope, not crazy. But you are crazy if you believe the only way to dive Bonaire is to rent a truck and DRIVE your brains out getting to shore dive sites. Shore diving includes docks! Driving is high effort.

Many of us very-lazy divers do a combo of dock & boat dives in Bonaire. Renting a truck means lugging gear and tanks. Dock diving minimizes effort and complexity. We gave up on truck diving many years ago. Too much work for a vacation.

P.S. Navigation on Bonaire is as easy as it gets.

In a thread from 2014 (Am I crazy? First time shore diver in Bonaire..), @giffenk said (above) that dock and boat diving in Bonaire was a good option for lazy ass divers (of which we are). We’re considering Bonaire but not 100% comfortable with DIY shore diving. We think a combo of dock diving (with stairs up/down for painless entries/exits) and some boat dives sound appealing, and a good intro to Bonaire. What do you think?

Are there sufficient dock dives available for a week and are we allowed to use those docks to access the dive if we don’t stay at associated accommodations? For example, I heard Den Lamen’s has a great dock dive but I think only guests of the condo can dive from the dock?

Most resorts will let you use their dock. I know Buddy and Divi don't care. Capt. Don's I think does not allow it. Certainly Black Durgon does not. Some locations that have dive shops don't have docks. Cliff is one. DFB there is great to anyone diving their whether they are using their tanks or not. I imagine it is the same at Yellow Submarine. The shore entry at some sites is just as easy as a dock. Something Special and Oil Slick Leap for instance. The shore entry at Invisibles, Red Slave and Vista Blue are very easy. The boats also don't go that far. You will miss some awesome and easy sites if you don't push your comfort level a bit. Most people are amazed at how easy shore diving is and immediately cherish the absence of a dozen other divers.

Last time I was in Bonaire on a day trip several years ago, we used Don's Habitat for diving. They were happy to let us use their dock for diving because we rented the tanks, and some in our party rented dive gear from them. We contacted them well in advance of our stopover, and stayed in contact with them, so had no issues at all. If you just showed up with all of your gear, including tanks from another location, they might have an issue with you using their dock, but a phone call or email should clarify their current policy.

Ok, silly question, how do you dock dive without driving?

Erik

Haha, not a silly question. I’m actually ok with the driving part but I just prefer easy entries and exits up or down dock steps/ ladders rather than entering off iron shore or sandy beaches. I’m afraid of falling on slippery rocks and injurying myself.

It doesn’t mean I won’t try easy beach shore entries later in the week but to start, dock dives seem like a good introduction.

The Den Laman dock is still restricted. You have to be staying in Den Laman or Sand Dollar condos and be diving with dive friends to use the dock.

Personally, I don’t think any dive is worth getting hurt on. I have passed on several dives in Bonaire due to the conditions at a given dive site.

We discovered Cayman Brac which offers better shore diving than Bonaire. It has boat cuts, ramps, and ladders in most of the shore diving sites across the island. The non-dock entries are much safer and more civilized. It has become our favorite shore diving location over Bonaire.

I went down at Angel City about our 3rd day so the rest of the week we used docks/easy entries. So here's some.

Most shops/resorts allow it, they just ask that yiou check in at the shop first.

We rented tanks at Den Laman and used their dock. It's the south side of Bari Reef so among the best dives, It was b4 Dive Friends took over the concession but that operator was a lot more restrictive than they are so I can't see them closing it to guests of the resort only..

Just south of there on the other side of Coco Beach club is the main Wannadive shop at Eden Beach Resort - they have a dock also. Their other facility south in North Belnem is a tank exchange - I believe there's a dock there also.

We paid $5 (10 yrs.ago) to dive at Habitat when all others were free. Could use their tanks/lockers instead of carrying ours from the parking lot a decent walk away. We dropped gear at the circle by the bar, the dive is down the ramp next to it - the shop on the upper level.

From there swim north and will run into Cliff - we turned near the memorial and floated back in over the LaMachaca wreck. The north dock at Habitat has wide stairs and benches - the boats use the other one.

We didn't dive there but you could have at Buddy's. Likely also at Belmar condos to the south - their other facility. We stayed there so IDK their rules for outside divers. Not the best dive though - good for a house reef but 5mins. south are better non-dock options.

A little easier is Windsock Beach - it's flat where you walk in. Also you can dive 18 Palms at the Plaza - it's a walk in off the beach. The shop is south by the lagoon, the dive almost at the north end of the property. The small lot NW of the main Plaza entrance (might say employee lot) is the closest parking - walk south thru the gate and the duve is maybe 100?' down - you'll see the tanks Toucan stages there.

I personally would not call the Dive Friends Cliff (Hamlet) entry easy but it gets you close. Sort of rocky and no dock.

Black Durgon is closed to non-guests and I believe so is Harbour Village,

I'd heard the opposite about the Divi - they discourage cruise divers waliking in there - nearest dive to the port besides the Dive Friends location which is where many of them go to shore dive.

1000 Steps is really a benign entry once you get down there - IIRC it's 42 stone steps. Coming back up is the problem....

Bachelors Beach in Belnem has a short ladder that either drops you onto the sand or into about 4' of water when the tide is in.

Lastly previous divers have marked the best entry points at some of the southern sites - usually piling up coral rubble. It's not always right where you park either so scout the area. Some like the Hooker don't have a decent entry that's not over the ironshore but where elae can you shore dive a big wreck?

Here's an easy entry - this is Vista Blue a far south site. Current can be ripping there in the afternoon though. One trick - if possible park your truck behind the entry point - from the water all the ironshore looks pretty much the same so it's hard to spot the exit.

One last thing - once you leave the resorts no sites have any facilities so you'll need to bring a minimum of extra gear and nothing you can't live w/o in case your truck is gone thru while you're gone. Do heed the windows down/doors open warnings - otherwise you'll be cleaning up glass. We just threw all our gear loose on the back seat and tanks in the bed - no one takes those.

A lot of the entries are pictured here so you can decide on other options. The brown stuff just offshore at many of them is submerged ironshore you have to scramble over. It's slick and the spiny urchins love it...

Hi @Dogbowl,

My wife is not crazy about shore diving. Bonaire is her favorite place to dive. We stay at Den Laman and dive with Dive Friends. We do the 2 tank AM boat dives to Klein Bonaire or unreachable north sites. We generally dive Barie Reef in the afternoon off the Sand Dollar/Den Laman Pier. Best of both worlds, best for my wife.

Best, Craig

+1 on no dock at Cliff. There are steps down to the shore but it's still a rocky entry once you step into the water.

1000 Steps is a very easy entrance, it's the walk back up that people hate.

If it were me, I'd buy a copy of Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy and tab all the sites marked as easy/beginner. There are some very easy entries even in the south.
