My first post on this forum:

Does anyone tip their instructor/the person accompanying you? I started thinking about this when I finished my AOP. Was I supposed to tip my instructor? What if, like now, I just go to dive through a diving company. Should I tip the boat driver/diver accompanying me?

Thanks. :D

I always tip on a commercial dive charter. But I have never heard or been asked to tip an instructor. It may depend on the situation in which you are doing your cert though.

Like what?
It just feels weird. I'm 24, my instructor was in his 50s. I'm a student, he dives for fun for 4 months of the year.
The reason I ask is whether it's considered rude not to tip. For example, does it fall under the haircut/restaurant and bar server category where it's the norm to tip, or is it like Starbucks, where you have the tipping jar but no one really expects you to tip?

I did't tip my instructors or the dive master during my OW course. However, I treated them to a nice dinner. When my daughter was going through her OW, she had the same instructor as I did. He tried out my spring strap and loved it. So we treated him to dinner AND bought him a pair of spring strap.

FWIW. I've never been tipped for teaching an OW class and have never expected it. But I do tip DMs, especially when on a weeklong trip somewhere as a good DM can really be worth his or her weight in gold....

I can ease your mind. PM me for my addy and for a modest tip of 200 bucks I'll give you a complete course on tipping etiquette.

So that's $240 with tip and tax:D

I didn't tip my original instructor but I gave him a set of fins which were causing me a lot of leg cramps. He let me use a pair of his Force Fins which took the cramps out. Next stop was Ebay, looking for a pair of FF's. Problem solved.
