Plenty of dives where carrying a flag is difficult, dangerous or just plan annoying.

Snag hazards such as kelp, or on and around wrecks or sea caves. Also when surface currents run in different directions to currents at depth or a strong surface wind to blow it.

I use my delayed SMB on 95% of dives and only use a permanent towed SMB on drift dives in known free of obstruction areas where the current is very strong from the start.
