so as you can tell Im a new diver...I keep hearing about Dive with Dan divers alert network... sorry to be stupid but what is this????????and Do i need this?

http://www.diversalertnetwork.org

It's an organization that provides medical assistance and insurance for divers in addition to doing research about dive injury and they compile accident statistics.

IMO, no diver should be without some sort of supplemental coverage in case of a dive accident.

Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a pretty cool thing, been around for 26 years, appears to be pretty universally highly regarded.

They've got one of the good dive insurance programs (not that others are bad) -- cost for DAN membership, plus a given insurance level, seems to run about the same as, for instance, an equivalent PADI dive insurance, and you get the neat DAN periodical.

Personally I know of one diver whose butt was saved financially by having DAN insurance, had a pneumothorax, needed a lot of medical attention, special low-altitude flight, etc.

I got DAN insurance immediately after certing last year, made sure that my GF got it when she certed, before going on a dive vacation.

DAN is a major organization dealing with the medical aspect of diving. They do a tremendous amount of research and testing for the benefiet of divers. They have 24 hour emergency and non-emergency medical hotlines for dive related medical problems.

They also offer insurance that covers pretty much every expense a diver may face in the event of a DCS hit or other problem?

Do you need it? Well, its about $100 a year, so all things considered, it's pretty cheap. Do you dive alot, especially away from home or in another country? Then yes. Your health insurance probably doesn't cover recompression or evacuation - things that can coast tens of thousands of dollars.

Bottom line, it's a hundred bucks a year that can really save your bacon in an emergency. Secondly, it helps research into diving medical issues.

I'd go for it. Just my 2 cents!

It's just like auto insurance for your car or fire insurance for your house. Hope that you never need them, but if something happens and you don't have lots of $$$, they can keep you solvent.

A major dive accident with chamber ride can run tens of thousand of dollars depending on where you are.

This insurance is pretty cheap.

And I'm a DAN member. Would not dive without it and hope that I never need it.

You should get it, but pray you never need it...

I asked the same questions when I started. But didn't sign up. Then I had a medical questions and my local dive shop suggested that I ask DAN. I called and got free advice that was better than my local doctors because these guys are dive medicine professionals. They understand the effects of diving on divers. I signed up right after that. I've needed them a couple of times for questions but nothing serious. However I am glad they are there for me when I do have a questions. It is worth the small investment.

Hi xsports,

Your insurance card ( either DAN or any other ) shoud be right next to your Ccard ... they go together like twins .

Personally I have nothing against DAN, but since I am Canadian, I am not insured with DAN since they don't cover while being in Cuba ....

DAN is absolutely a great thing. I didnt sign up for years, as to I didn't dive very much, and the dives I was doing were in the US, and werent very deep. Now that Im getting more technical in my diving and diving more often, you bet I signed up.
