Are filters still required on the new Go Pros? I'm thinking about buying a Go Pro 13 and wondering if I should order a red filter with it and which one?

Thank you

No, you don't need them, assuming you do color correction in post.

I add red back in DaVinci or Premiere Pro on a GoPro 12. Anything after GoPro 10 is quite good in terms of color and picture quality for an action cam.

(My GoPro 7 on the other hand was hopeless and the colors were oof, especially at depth.)

But a GoPro13 you can absolutely just shoot out of the box in 4k 10-bit color and fix the colors in post.

Even with auto white balance and ninja turtle green footage out of the camera, you can easily make it quite good in post and completely eliminate the green and fix the color and add the red back.

It's incredible what information cameras save these days.

But you absolutely need to do work in post or it will look quite bad, especially at depth.

I don't know what DaVinci or Premiere Pro are. I hope this is free software. Is there a youTube video I can watch to learn how to do this?

I lost my red filter on a dive. Was heading up at the end of the dive and saw it falling below. Didn't chase it. Didn't miss it.

Two ways to avoid filters. Put your own light on the subject or post process. Trying to remember the post process app I used. There was a free trial one and a low cost purchase one that allowed bulk processing. And the above mentioned software that I don't own either.

Okay so I guess I will need to look into this post processing thing. I just don't think I'll be able to afford the ones mentioned above.

I use the free DaVinci for post processing (and no red filter on my GoPro). It's got more than you'll ever need for underwater footage. However, the learning curve is steep, despite the plethora of online instructional videos.

Great news for you:

DaVinci is both better than Premiere Pro, and free :)

And yes, there's a bajillion tutorials on youtube on how to use it. Should be about 2 hours to learn as you're only using a very small portion of the program:

1) editing on the timeline tab
2) color grading on the color tab
