As you are a DM Canidate, you should be able to find out the answer yourself by checking the Instructor Manual. ;)

Did you ask the instructor why he wants you to take them all again?

Your instructor is your mentor. Follow all his leads (granted he is a good one). In the long run, your students/buddies will look up to you.

If you feel that you cannot master the materials provided to you, than it is probably a good idea to check out the Instructor Manual. Or just buy one-sooner or later you might want to get your IDC.

I took the DM course twice. Why? Because I didn't do my internship in time, i was moving to another city and fell behind with college and partying too much, lol.
so...git-r-done!:D

Anne Marie is right. Start looking up standards yourself. That will be ever more practice for the IE.

stephhhhh:
HEY guys,

I failed one of the exams but my instru wants me to redo all of them again. Is he right?

As someone else said, you really should be checking this stuff yourself - its expected of you to be able to use the instructor manual.

As for the actual question, no he's wrong. You only resit what you failed and you resit as many times as needed.

From what i can gather if your posts are true the instructor is in gross breach of agency standards and should be reported - at the very least he needs to be told how he's meant to conduct the course. This full resit, the insisting on stamina tests repeated despite passing, doubling the length of swim test etc.
He hasn't done any of the course correctly.

Congratulations on passing most of them.

My response assumes you are taking a PADI DM course. Other agencies might vary.

The PADI Divemaster Instructor Guide simply says to retest. That could be interpreted either way. I’ve never made a DM candidate retake a test they’ve passed, based on the way PADI conducts their Instructor exams. Since in this case, the Instructor Guide is not specific, it’s really up to your instructor. You could campaign otherwise, if you wish. If your scores on the tests you passed are high enough, your case should be strong.

If your DM internship is leading to a job with your instructor or his employer, they can impose greater requirements (such as the swim requirement you mentioned in another thread). But those requirements should be independent of the PADI requirements. They should certify you as a PADI DM if you pass the PADI requirements. We are not supposed to impose higher standards on PADI courses. However, they could certify you as a PADI DM and not let you work for them.

Which exam gave you trouble?

It does seem as if this instructor is going over and above on some things, however in relation to this one item, I'm not sure what the issue is. I recognize that having you retest all the exams may be a little more than most would expect, but if you know your stuff it should be nothing more than a little time and inconvenience.

As the instructor manual will tell you, this course is where your theory will be taught, not in AI or an IDC. So if you are to master it, now is the time. And if you have not mastered it then he is absolutely correct requiring further study.

"Besides scoring 75% or higher, the candidate must show mastery of all exam items." Page 3-12 DM instructor guide.

If you have the required mastery, it shouldn't be a concern. I relate this to an open water student who passes the exam but fails every tables question. Am I required to pass this student? Would I be helping or hurting him if I did? Not that I'm saying you fall into this example, only you and he know that.

Keep at it and try not to get discouraged. Good luck.

My instructor wants me to get 2 or less wrong or I have to retake. I personally totally agree with this, even though it might not be PADI standards. The extra book work can only help you should you decide to take the IDC, as you will have to take these tests again in the beginning of that course.

Retaking all of them, however, seems kind of ridiculous if you were, in fact, getting 0-1 wrong on all the others.... Have you been doing them all at once like a DM Final Exam or individually going in to do them? Perhaps that is the problem...

I took all of them at once. Well finally things got better, he admitted that I was right. But doesn't think it's fair to do it that way. So finally passed the theory!
