I'm taking the DM course on Koh Tao and wanted to know if anyone has info about liability insurance. It is needed befor I get there or am I covered by the school which is Planet Scuba?

I asked this same question to my instructor before I did my dm. He told me that it wasn't necessary because until I had the card in hand, I was still a student.

I'm not exactly sure if this is right but that's what he told me. You might want to email your certifying agency directly. They should be able to answer that question without any doubt.

....pretty sure you arent' required to have liability insurance in Thailand either way.

You don't need professional insurance when you take the course since you're not a pro yet. After you're certified, you only need the insurance if you're working as a DM.

Don't know the specifics about Thailand but if you send me a prepaid, I'm happy to investigate the question over there :)

other posts are correct. You can NOT buy the pADI insurance until you are a DM. In surance is only REQUIRED in certain countries for working DM's. Thailand is not one of them but I bet the US is (although I am not certain about the US. I recently checked all these questions myself with PADI.

Like everyone says you dont need the liability insurance. while you are on ko tao I would deff recommend going to the dan site in mae hadd, forgotten the guy's name who runs it but he's really helpful and can answer you any questions on what insurance would suit you.
What everyone seems to have neglected to mention is that oce you are a qualified dm, although you cant get sued in thailand you can get sued for any accident that happens there in a court elsewhere, ie uk, Australia and usa. for the sake of 70 pounds sterling it would be stupid not to bother, also any decent dive shop on ko tao will require you to have cover... if they dont then you should ask yourself why as some of them do not have nearly as good a safety record than others.

Planet Scuba are an excellent dive shop, they're on a par with asia divers and budda view so you'll be diving with a good team.

if you want any accom details / recommendations drop me a message and I'll be glad to help.

I'm no guru on the subject but have been advised on what you seek.

Now I would have insurance but I'm skint. The general rule of thumb for DM's here is to go for the DAN personal cover.

There's no point with public as you won't have a work permit. Tricky to write any more, PM me if you want me to elaborate.

Enjoy, hope you're not coming over in the next day or so as the Thai Navy are in the bay waiting to rescue. Weather's all good though, we're just coming out of monsoon and expecting all will be back to normal very soon.

I agree with Dorsetboy on his recommendations for where to dive, but Crystal Dive Resort is also worth checking out. There's a lot of support for DM's and there's a bar (and swimming pool in Jan) on location too!

Am planning to export some of the lovely scottish weather we're having at the moment... namely rain, sleet, rain and more of the same... you guys are having far too much fun out there!:D

Not that Im jealous stuck in an office in edinburgh... obviously!
