I was in Puerto Vallarta from May 12 to May 18 and was lucky enough to spend some time with Leslie from Local Divers of Puerto Vallarta.
My wife, my 8 year old son, my brother and his girlfriend all wanted to try and scuba dive for the first time and Leslie was great. The day after we arrived in Puerto Vallarta Leslie and her friend Don picked us up from our hotel and drove us to her neighbor's house in the village she lives in so that they could all do some pool diving in a private pool. The village she lives in is really cool and it was nice to have something more low key and very personal.
The pool was real nice and her neighbors were great. Having Leslie teach my family was more like being with a friend rather than with a business which was great. Even while we were in the pool she had to go pick her daughter up from school and bring her back to the house we were at. At first Leslie had her daughter try and stay busy, but after a while she ended up getting in the pool with us and had a blast playing with my kids and my brother. Her daughter is 5 and since my 6 year old son also came with us everyone had a fun time.
Leslie was very patient teaching everyone and made sure everybody felt safe and secure before and during each step of learning. I had a blast watching my 8 year old son swim laps around the bottom of the pool with the scuba gear on. After the time in the pool we met back up with don and they gave us a ride back to the hotel.
The next day my family and I met up with Leslie for a combination scuba / snorkel trip. Since there were 9 of us all together we had the while boat to ourselves which was totally awesome. Our captain was Mui and really knew his way around and was very helpful.
Our trip started off with us meeting Leslie and Mui at the boat. We then went over to the fuel dock, fueled up and then we were off to do some snorkeling and diving. We first pulled up to a beach than had the big "pirate ship" at it. We decided that we didn't want to deal with that many people so we went looking for a private beach. The next beach that we went to looked really awesome and would have been great to hang out on, but unfortunately there were a bunch of jelly fish in the water and since none of us really wanted to get stung we decided to go to a different beach. The next beach we went to was the same, really cool, but a bunch of jelly fish. We ended up going back to the first beach, but luckily the "pirate ship" was already gone so my family basically got the beach to themselves.
After unloading part of my family the rest of us went out to get in the water. My son, brother, and I were the first to get in the water. My son decided that he couldn't clear his ears and so he wasn't able to descend with us. Unfortunately he ended up getting back on the boat with my brother's girlfriend. Oh well I guess, maybe next time. Once my son was back on the boat my brother and I went down with Leslie. Even though my brother isn't certified, he does have some experience diving so Leslie took us on a real nice dive. We saw a lot of different fish, some corals, and other stuff, but nothing really special. Since this was just an introductory dive my my family I didn't expect anything really "cool", but it was still a really nice dive and was a lot of fun.
After my brother and I got out of the water, his girlfriend got in for a one on one with Leslie. After doing a back roll into the water I thought my brother's girlfriend was going to cry because she was so worried about everything, but Leslie did a great job calming her down and then they finally submerged and went down. I figured they would only be down for a few minutes, but they ended up being down for at least a half hour. When my brother's girlfriend finally came back up she was all smiles. After getting down she ended up getting comfortable and with Leslie's help they dove around the reef and she had a great time checking everything out. I'm sure that because of Leslie's patience and help my bother's girlfriend will continue to dive and I'm sure she'll get certified one day.
After we were all back in the boat we went back to the beach to get my wife. Unfortunately she ended up deciding to not scuba so we just hung out, ate some lunch Leslie provided, and then coming back in. On the way in we went through Los Arcos and checked out the blue footed boobies.
Leslie was really great to go out with and she made the trip very enjoyable. Diving and hanging out with her was definitely more like hanging out with a friend and everything was very personal. When I go back to Puerto Vallarta I will definitely be calling Leslie back up to go out with her again.
