Maybe a bit off track, but I read in Dive Training that it's best to "hydrate" about an hour before a dive. It takes that long for water to affect your system. It may have advantages regarding DCS as well. But here I assume it's just about being thirsty.

No problem in fresh water. It depends on the beer in question, but quite a few have a specific gravity of 1.03, therefore as long as you don't tilt the bottle it shouldn't dilute. However salt water is also 1.03 so you'd have to be really careful.

Also, I'd recommend a flat IPA. If you prefer fizzy lager type beer this will be a problem as it will seem flat at anything more than 9m.

Ummmmm. am I missing something here. you listed salt water AND fresh water at 1.03...if I remember my science classes isn't salt 1.02 and fresh 1.00 (ish)

Salt 1.03, fresh 1.00 according to my PADI manuals.

And beer is a tiny bit more than 1 according to some websites

My wife drinks probably 60oz before our first dive. IDK she's crazy! I'm lucky if i drink 40 all day. She also wears a 5 mil with a 5/3 hood vest in 82 degree water so there is that lol

I guess if she's been doing that for ages, she should be alright but drinking too much water before a dive can also cause a bad reaction.

No, I meant beer was fine in fresh water (at 1.00) as it has a higher specific gravity, but problematic in salt with roughly the same SG (1.03).

However, it was all meant to be tongue in cheek and not to be taken too seriously :D.

I'll add that good sport drinks hydrate you quicker than water.

Interesting topic. Never thought to drink anything underwater, especially beer. The final gravity of most beers is between 1.01 and 1.03. There are some higher gravity scotch ales or bocks that might push 1.04 or 1.05 so it's definitely possible in salt water.

Anybody else see that old movie where Richard Dreyfuss is fishing in a lake and mistakenly drops his full beer bottle overboard, it hits a crack on the bottom and lets out these prehistoric fish that proceed to create havoc?
