I'm 2 weeks away from my Open Water classes, and was wondering....
does anyone dive with a goatee/mustache? I asked the girl at the LDS where I'm taking my class, and she said that if you keep it short, and use some type of diving grease(??), I should be OK.
OK pros, what's your advice? :06:

I don't know her experience with a goatee (oh, the visual there!) but I had one for several years, even a full beard, and experienced no proplems. Should a poor fit be an issue (leaking around the edge of the mask from the hair not allowing a seal, use a little mustache wax or vasoline... otherwise don't sweat it :D

I have been diving with one since I started with no issues. The only issue is mask leakage and I have never had a problem. Keep it trimmed and I have heard that a little silicon also helps although I have never used it myself.

If you are just starting, you will know the first pool session if there is an issue. Since you will be filling and clearing your mask anyway...you will find out if it is short enough.

Unless your upper lip beard is long and bushy enough to be considered by the Guiness World records, have no fear. I have been diving with one since day one with no leak so far. The days I lack to trim it and I feel it might leak (especially in cold water when the mask skirt might be a bit stiffer) I apply some chap-stick....but even so I have never had leaks there......now when I smile underwater that is a totally new situation.

Exactly, I echo all the above poster's comments.

I've been diving with some combination of facial hair, goatee/ moustache since day 1 of diving and have never had a problem with facial hair affecting the fit of my mask on my face.

Full beard, mustache, no problems. Again, it's not real bushy, though.

I've heard a lot of mustache/mask advice, but I've never experienced a problem or seen anyone else with a mustache have a problem.

i had a goatee for about 2 years....while it wasn't that big a deal small amounts of water would leak into my mask sooooo.....

i shaved it off....now that's dedication

Though it's not for "everyone" some mustache wearers will shave just a little tiny gap below the nose for the mask skirt to fit snug to the skin. It is a different "cleaner" look on the stache though and so it's not for everyone. I've also heard of folks using stache wax for better adherance of the skirt. I myself only grow one on very long surface intervals :) otherwise off it comes.
