Oh, and there is some really cool (and cold) diving in Perth, too. If you are on Facebook, check out the WAUPs group.

That just reminded me.

Albany 3-4 hours drive South from Perth. They have the HMAS Perth wreck, Cheynes III, Weedy Seadragons, Seals. All in a toasty 15-16 Degrees C. Awesome diving though.

Hi Alcina,

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, I'll be in Oz for 10 days, but I'll be in WA for 3--4 days (2--3 days of diving). I have cousins in Adelaide I'm visiting.

MA:
Exmouth Dive Centre for Exmouth. If you do make the trek up there (and with your limited time you'll need to fly) just make sure you dive navy pier. It costs and arm and a leg and then some, but wow what a dive. My buddy and i lost our way slightly because there were too many oversized fish in our way to see where we were going. Only one op gets the licence so just use them for that dive, but EDC for the rest.

is there a reason why its so expensive other than there being only one operator?

Rapid bay is worth a visit for the leafy sea dragons if you get the chance. it's 2 hours south (drive) of adelaide and may be worth finding a local guide, which while I'm an adelaide "local" of two years, I've only done one dive there.

there's another purpose sunk warship in Adelaide as well.

I might be doing a teacher exchange and living in Bunbury for a year starting February 2015. I'd love some info on diving (conditions, temperature, sites, shops, etc) in that area...

Bunbury Sucks!!!!

Had to tell it like it is, I used to live there.

I always used to go down south (further down south) to dive or surf TBH. Charters in town do go out to a little prepared wreck called the Lena, but when the Swan is just down the road in Dunsborough then it's a no brainer.

HMAS Swan (Busselton or Dunsborough dive centres)
Busselton Jetty (Busselton) Great Camera dive only 9m
Rottnest Island

Are the best dives IMO

Temps ran from 17 degrees C up to 21 in the summer. So firm 5mm Semi-dry territory, or 7 if you're Warm Water Wimp like me.

Viz. Extreme best is 20m. Normally more like 10m. Some bad days it is less than that. Although I'm basing a lot of that on DM-ing on the Swan wreck

Dive charters can be be pricey. So if you have kit and a mate with a boat (and cover) then that is the way to go.

Outside of Perth the rules on spear fishing are relaxed and a lot of the guys I certified were big into Cray hunting. Abalone is also possible around Dunsborough, but fish sensibly please :)
