Periodically, stop finning and clasps your hands. Remain motionless but breath normally, wait a few seconds and check your buoyancy. Adjust accordingly.

Lots of good tips that I would recommend, so what else can I say? Oh yes...

Great thread. I would like to add:
Take responsibility for yourself. By this I mean don't let others push you in to doing something beyond your limits, know your gear, learn everything you can about self-rescue, keep learning and improving your skills. It good to have a buddy, but do everything you can to avoid having to put your life in their hands.

To expand on the previous tip, learn self reliance. When something goes wrong, its almost always better to solve the problem yourself. Learn self rescue techniques and anticipate possible problems. This includes carrying the necessary equipment (Knives, redundant air supply, etc). Remember, you may be better off going to the surface than swimming to your buddy if he is more than a few feet away (which he shouldn't be, but it happens) Without regular practice with your dive buddy, sharing air has a lousy safety record.

That being said, always dive with a buddy. It reduces your chance
of shark attack by 50%... ;)

Read The Essentials of Deeper Sport Diving. Covers EVERYTHING that PADI does and MORE with the exception of explaining everything in every way that you'd ever want or need to know, it has pictures, and it TEACHES you things. Should be a required read.

Respect the water and everything in it. Even fin wash can damage reefs. Remember the diver behind you with the knife might not appreciate you walking on the coral.

Always dive in a bikini.. it will make your assigned dive buddy stay close to and always willing to help out if need be.
