Nippurmagnum,

Welcome to SB. Its quite a place, hope you find it interesting.

I live in Washington DC also. In a word, the answer to your question is "yes and no".

Can you beach dive in NC? Yes, theoretically. Is it good diving? No, it sort of sucks.

Where waves roll up on a beach, generally there is quite a bit of stuff stirred up in the water that obscures visibility. If you try it, mind the tides. Go with an experienced buddy.

[That being said, could there be a decent spot off the beach somewhere? Certainly. You might spend some time looking for it, but it could be there.]

There are quarries at Millbrook and Lake Rawlings that offer fresh water training environments. Beyond those, your best bet are the boats. They do, however, offer multi-dive passes (at Lynnhaven Dive Center and other places) that reduces the cost of the boat diving somewhat.

Dive Safe,

Doc

Be sure to check out the NC Wreck Divers forum. There was a post there a week or so ago about some decent shore diving on something called the "Triangle Wrecks".

Where in NC are you, or are you still in DC? I'm moving from South Florida to Charlotte, and plan to do as much diving as I can when I get back there. I tend to do a lot of quarry diving, just to keep my hand in, and can always use a good buddy.

I'm actually planning a dive for early October with a couple of buddies. We haven't set the site yet, but it will probably be in one of several quarries in the central part of the state. I'm thinking about one near Burlington that I haven't done yet. You're welcome to join us. Just send me a PM with your phone number if you're interested, and I'll give you the info.

I'm also interested in diving the U-boat (U-1105) in the Potomac River. I think that you might want to get a few more dives under your belt before trying it, as it's in strong current and has very low viz, but it sounds pretty interesting.

Welcome to the board,
Grier

I guess I should have read your first post more carefully. You said that you live in DC. Well, you're welcome to join us anyways!

Safe ascents,

Hi and welcome to the board, it sure does help pass the time away between dives!
