Well, here's my own dive report for yesterday:
We left out of Snug Harbor on a charter arranged through Pier Dive. This was 1 of our 2 'freebie' charters with this boat since it almost sank the last time we were out (there's another thread about this) and the captain felt bad about it. Anyway, the boat comes to the dock and we start loading our gear. There are 5 divers and 1 captain, no DM, no other crew. Three of us have doubles with air, two of them have two sets, and the other two (Chris and Ed) are diving single tanks with EANx. Lots of tanks, gear, etc and not so much room left over on the 27' boat but it wasn't bad at all.
Travel time out to the wreck was about an hour and the seas were around 4' when we tied in. The other two divers (aside from me, Chris and Ed) were doing a deco dive so they were the first to splash when we got there. Since I was the guy with the curse I think everyone wanted me in the water first
I strapped on my double 72's (with some help from the captain), splashed and waited on the anchor line in the 4' seas for what seemed like forever.
Ed splashed next and then Chris. The three of us gathered at the anchor line, checked our gauges/equipment/etc and headed down the anchor line. Ed went first, then Chris then me (since I was the only one in the group diving air and would have the least amount of bottom time). We followed the line down into the murky, green sea and hit the con tower at roughly 90'. The first thing that happens is that the switch for my crappy C4 light gets caught in some monofilament line and I can't get it free (one of the pictures in Ed's post above is of this incident). I go for my shears after trying to muscle it free but Chris managed to get his knife out first and cut through most of it. I couldn't get my shears back into the pouch on my harness and ended up holding them for most of the dive (until I dropped them at some point...).
That ate up about a minute or so of our already limited bottom time
Anyway, after that we started heading up to the bow. Vis was around 3-5' in my estimation. We were together for a little while (Chris first, me second and Ed last with his camera) until we rounded the bow. I was looking into a hole at some fish and when I looked up there was -nobody-. I kept on swimming for a minute or two before deciding to turn back and head towards to con tower again and look there. The first thing I came upon were what looked like two small underwater suns. These turned out to be the lighting on Eds camera (which I was relieved to see). I still couldn't find Chris however (who in the end was about 2' away from Ed). I started swimming towards the stern for about a minute and then turned around to go back to the con. This time I didn't see Chris OR Ed OR the con.... well now I'm starting to get nervous and running out of no-deco time, although I still had plenty of gas. Turns out I was about 3' or so below and to the right on the con. Luckily I swam up a bit and there's the con, anchor line, Ed and Chris.
I had about 2 minutes of no-stop time left at this point so I poked around near the line for a bit and then started my ascent. Chris started shortly after me and Ed stayed for a but longer as he had a richer mix to get some more footage. Chris and I met up at around 60' where I was doing a short stop. We headed up the line and stopped a bit at 40' and then did our safety stop at 20'. We ended up taking about 10-12 minutes to break the surface because we waited for Ed to come up to 20' and waited through his stop as well (we had the gas so why not, right?). My max depth was 119' and total time on the wreck was about 10 minutes I'd say... I haven't checked my computer yet.
Getting back on the boat was a real non-event and after everyone was aboard we headed back to the docks. We were supposed to do another dive but for whatever reason we just headed straight in.
All in all the dive was OK. The main thing was that I finally got down there. I really want to go back next summer and do a nitrox/deco dive on the wreck so I can see a lot more (we didn't get to see the blast hole this dive although we could have been right above it). If I learned anything on this dive I would say that a backup cutting tool is essential, an 18W HID light would have been really, REALLY nice on this dive (saving up for that next I guess), running a reel would have been helpful and on a dive this deep with so much to see deco would have been nice.
