I am expecting to be moving to Yokohama early 2026 and I am wondering about the usual means of diving in Japan. Here in Canada, and when I lived in Qatar, the sites were free access to anyone with the qualifications and gear, ie you did not have to arrange dive trips/excursions with a shop to go diving. Is there a similar practice in Japan if you know the sites, or is it best to arrange all your diving thru a service provider?

Can anyone offer good dive sites relatively close to Yokohama and whether or not you can dive them without going thru a service provider?

Maybe even offer up some good shops near Yokohama?

Sorry if this type of question has been asked and answered before.

Chiba and Mikomoto are fantastic but require booking. Closest place where you can just dive is probably Okinawa?

I am unsure about South part of Honshu Japan and Kyushu but yes in Okinawa things are more chill and you can just go dive. But our Izu divesites are quite far from Tokyo so it is nice to use a divecenter that gives us changing rooms, showers, toilets, tanks,.... (for a fee). but yes there are rules where and when to dive.

There are several good diving spots around Yokohama, about 1 to 1.5 hours away by car or Shinkansen:
  1. Tateyama (Hojo Beach)
Famous for a well-known Napoleon wrasse named Yoriko.
  2. Ito
A dive shop called Ito Diving Service BOMMIE offers dives where you can see sharks underwater.
  3. Hayama / Miura City
I’ve been to Hayama once. It’s more suitable for practicing diving, though the water isn’t very clear.
  4. Atami City
The highlight here is a sunken ship called Asahi 16.

Here is an official site of all diving centers that allow buddy diving aka diving without a DM. Scroll down for the map.
