My sister bought a condo near South Beach for a get-away. My brother-in-law used to dive, but hasn't in awhile. I was wondering if there were any decent dives off the shore that I could take him on to get him acclimated to the water again. Any ideas? I am hoping to be there on the way back from Cayman on Dec 5.

Thanks,
Rob

Well from my experience almost all the beach dives in this area require a good size swim out to the first reef. Very possible but if he isn't a stron swimmer he may get really tired. That being said in my opinion the two best spots are the dania beach pier dive and the commercial blvd pier dive.

I did a dive a few years ago off South beach. What I remember of the dive was a lot of trash, dead or dying soft corals, a lot of fire coral, and very little in the way of critters or fish. My buddy and I confirmed why everybody goes north to Broward to beach dive.
It may be different now, but there is no way I would do another dive off South Beach unless somebody from that area could promise better.

Well Dania Beach is about a 20 to 30 minute drive from South Beach and Commercial is about 45 minutes. Basically any beach in Broward has a reef line as bit out due to the gulf stream. If you need a guide while you are down here or just someone to dive with let me know. I'd be up for it.

That sounds great. Thanks for the offer.

This board is such a great idea. I was hooked the first time I saw it. The divers are mostly so friendly and willing to share their diving. I am looking forward to heading back to Florida to visit relatives (Port Charlotte, West Palm Beach area, Lady Lake and South Beach). I'll have to increase my stays to make more time for diving. I have been diving off of West Palm and Boynton, as well as Key Largo.

You couldn't be more right about that. I'd like to add that our moderators here do a great job keeping the spoilers at bay... folks like NetDoc take a lot of heat but without them we'd be as low as rec.scuba.

Well almost any dive shop down here will rent you gear. The only one I have experience with is Tarpoon Lagoon. Bouth the south beach store and the hialeah store.
