It looks like our next trip maybe to Myrtle Beach as some dear friends just moved to that area. So anyone know if there is good diving near Myrtle Beach?

If not, I can likley head up to the Moorhead area, and try and do some wrecks there... but it would be nice to discover that Myrtle Beach has some decant diving.

I looks like we may be there around XMAS.

Ron,

Wrightsville Beach, NC is 50 miles north of Myrtle Beach, much closer than Morehead City. There is some diving in Myrtle too, but the vis isn't as good as NC, because of the Gulf Stream being further out.

Lots of cool WWII wrecks here off Wrightsville Beach, a passenger liner that sank in 1878, freighters that sank in storms, blockade runners from the civil war, and artificial reefs.....warm water, usually good vis, and tropical species!

Come on to Wilmington!

Thanks for the links! I can drive an hour for BETTER VIS!

So what are the water temps like in December? I have a drysuit, or a 3mm.

Ron,

Right now, surface temps are in the mid to high 80s offshore, and 78 or so on the bottom. Inshore will be slightly cooler, but not much in the summer. Temps on the offshore wrecks don't drop down too much below 60 in the dead of winter. I have been diving in a 3/2 with no hood a week before Christmas in 2000, and had 71 at 120 fsw. Big problem in the winter here, is that not too many have drysuits, and hard to find a charter to go in the winter. We are a growing/advancing dive community here in wilmington, and more folks are lookin to go dry. It is on my agenda, just can't afford it now. You can dive here year round, best part of season here is early summer for the Sandtigers, and Fall for the tropical fish and best vis. Winter can be unpredicable with the nor'easters..
