Going to be diving with my buddy on Friday morning in Malibu to check out new sites. We're thinking of Leo Carillo or Malibu Road. Anyone have any recent reports on conditions or suggestions on good sites? Thanks!

I helped with a Rescue class last Saturday and Sunday at the far end of Malibu Rd. Pretty good size waves, people knocked down going in and out through the surf, fins lost, viz was non-existent. It poured (really poured) here last night around 4 AM for over an hour, and since this is the first real rain in a long time, I expect there will be lots of runoff. I'm planning to go to Casino Point on Friday, but will try the LA County 3R class on Saturday at Nicholas

Yea I can't imagine that vis will be great Friday morning with the rain runoff. On the other hand High tide is at 9:50am and the swell is backing down, so that will help a bit. I'd aim for rocky structure to dive because sometimes that helps vis when the surge is sweeping up sand.

I'm always looking for buddies these days (my usuals are flaking out or buried in fully-employed graduate degree studies). My plan is Corral on Saturday at mid-morning if you're interested.

@scubiegirl

It's a longer drive for you, obviously, but you may want to consider heading down to Laguna. Dive conditions have been fair this week (8-10ft vis, with 2-4ft surf), and conditions will likely improve by Friday (should be about 10-15ft vis, with 1-2ft surf).

I personally would not dive Malibu, at least until conditions clear up. I used to dive Malibu every week, and I've seen it after it rains - it's really not fun (not to mention not particularly safe) to dive anywhere near kelp when you can't see your hand in front of you.

This rain is going to leave it murky for quite some time.

Thanks for all the responses but I guess I might have been the only one to have missed the weather forecast! We won't be diving this Friday given all the rain run off. 2ndjetty - thanks for the offer but I'm volunteering Saturday morning. Will post our plans for some other time.

hey scubie girl, i was hopin you'd had a better reply by now. its been pretty crappy all over. last friday night at midnight 2 at haggartys were recklessly fun and then 2 at malaga the next night again was 3-4 and maybe 2 in spots that opened up to 5 ft viz and just plain difficult. i think we're gonna out tomorrow night somewhere around big rock or malibu road. and were kind of considering up by carpenteria?? wherever there is boldery reefs that anchor thick kelp is what were looking for. hey we practically go every weekend. lately the last couple of months have been all over palos verdes. im 50 my son is 30 and a couple of people are getting interested in what we've been doing the last 11 months 90 dives each. almost all different shore dives. anyway if you want to go to some of the same sites let us know we always like to meet up with anyone.
