Polar bear club? I thought those guys swam naked in the ice! I guess all you need is a love of COLD water!

If you want to dive in with the polar bears, you need a speedo and your head examined. If you wish to dive Lake Michigan on January 1st You'll need a dry suit, preferablely with dry gloves. Plan on wearing bocu undergarments. Surface temps will be about thirty five at best. You will also need an environmentally sealed reg and a pony. This is serious cold were talking here. You can count on the viz in water less then ten feet being about zero. Viz out on the wrecks this time of year is generally not too bad. have fun!

yep, like polar_diver said, people in a polar bear club, just don their swim trunks, and jump through a hole in the ice.

If I read your post correctly, you want to be a diver in the water as supervision while others do the "mentally questionable" activity?
If that is the case, I would suggest contacting the local fire and rescue squad that will be there that day. At least around here, that is a requirement for an organized polar bear dip. The divers generally just end up standing in the water about chest deep for however long it takes for all of the polar bears to get wet. I've seen where that can run as long as 45-60 minutes.
For the stuff you will need as a diver, see SwimJim's description.
That event generally brings in a lot of money for whatever charity the organization hosting the event is supporting.
