That other hobbies cost more does not mean SCUBA is inexpensive.

Really, that would be like me saying:

Anyone who says driving a Porsche Carrera GT (MSRP $440,000) is expensive needs to rethink that statement.

Look at what a Ferrari Enzo costs. Or a Bugatti Veyron. Or a Lamborghini Reventon. Or a Pagani Zonda F Roadster. And the list goes on.

all of the sudden, towards the end here ... it became a competition to see who had the most expensive hobbies ... seems only TSandM remembered my original concern... but i am quite sure im going doubles at this point ... looks like most of what i spend will be made back up if need be ( i use my equipment therefor it is serviced accordingly) so it will be in quality shape

Try being a college student and diving. I don't even have a place to keep my gear. My backseat is also known as my LDS. But seriously diving can be really expensive or kinda expensive. Buy used gear from reputable people such as on this forum and find alternatives to expensive OMS Dive Rite Halcyon etc. accessories. 9 times out of 10 there is a cheaper alternative available at walmart or west marine you just have to be sort of creative.

Now golf. Clubs, cart, green fees, weird clothing, etc. Gary D.

Golf shirts? Wierd? -or- Old men in speedos? Beer belly overlapping speedos?

I do the standard GW stuff, 40k, fantasy, BFG, WAB, ect. I also do FOW, DBx, and other historicals.

I pay to get my minis painted so its even more expensive than normal. I'm also always building an army/fleet, Im ADD that way.

I have not heard of this for years. I used to supplement my income by painting miniatures. Did a chess set for a shop in columbus that is no longer there. I used to hit the Drowsy Dragon every week. Also painted some mechs for a guy to use at Capcon at OSU and took first place in a contest there in 86 or 87. It was a Thunderbolt Mountain Miniature I did up. Cool thing was that the owner of TMM was one of the judges. Also had an ongoing job with a guy from minnesota who saw my work at the convention. Did a bunch or 25mm Aztec warriors for him. Most fun was the Mechs I did for another person. THe Wolfclan house crests were a bear. Kinda got out of it after getting married and moving out of state then the lead ban went into effect and the pewter and other alloy figures were just to crappy to mess with. Are the new castings any good? Used to be alot of cleanup and detail fixing on the newer stuff and people did not want to pay extra at the time for the work involved in making them look good.

Welcome to ScubaBoard. :P

but i am quite sure im going doubles at this point ...

Good for you. Just make sure you learn to use them properly.

I prefer diving doubles to singles. Even for mambsy pambsy 30 foot one hour recreational dives I use my doubles 99% of the time.

Casts are better, plastic is common, so is slide transfers so you dont have to hand paint symbols.

good painters make a good bit of $$ nowadays

If you smoked a pack a day you could spend almost $2000 a year puffing smoke, If you drink like most of the people I know racking up a $50 bar tab 3-4 days a week is nothing, if you shoot or collect guns I bet you would own a good $5k-10K in only 3 quality firearms, if you like cars go by any single car part for a performance race engine and try and not max out a credit card.

Everything in life is expensive and it only gets worse. I have been diving since 2001 and own $18000 in gear and I just got my first doubles wing and dont have the manifolds or bands yet. I will be taking my cave course in march and my deco procedures class in july and my evolution rebreather course hopefully next fall. Add that up now... Drysuit $3100, Canister LED light from solus $2200 complete doubles set $950, second aluminum 40 for deco gas with hardware $200, training for cave class $1500, trip to aventuras mexico for cave class $2000 +/-, deco class $700, evo class $1500, travel to evo and deco classes $1000 +/-, evolution rebreather $9999.00, normoxic trimix rebreather training $1200, hypoxic trimix rebreather training $1200, Scooter $3200, video camera/housing/strobes, $3500 having the time of my life and diving without bubbles... priceless. I have always since day one wanted a ccr and my goal has never changed and I see it as money well spent because I would rather dive than do anything else on earth.

Dont even think for one minute that skipping straight to rebreather is the way to go, I sat in on a evo class and witnessed first hand a variety of stupid things that could kill a person. That is serious stuff and not for the 10 days a year vacation diver. You need to be good, really good, with doubles and singles and stages and scooters and tables and buoyancy and trim and everything before going ccr and even then your first day in the pool will feel like the first day you dawned OW gear in OW class.
