Hello, I am looking to become certified as an instructor or divemaster, does anyone know anything about internships? I have seen a couple people talking about getting your diving courses paid for and then working for the company so long afterwards to pay them back. I have looked around on the internet but can't find any info. So if anyone could help I would be gratefull.
Thanks a lot.
Dustin

Hello,

A few years ago, when I did my Divemaster, you could do an internship with real students :eyebrow: , or just work with fellow dm's & instructor candidates.
:sleeping_
I found that while working for nothing with real students was challenging, it was the best experience that I could ever get. Simulating something with another candidate is one thing, but when you're actually working with students & the problems are real is another. You'll have a chance to learn a lot. If you can find an internship, I would take it.
Good Luck to you.
BTW: if you fill out your profile more people might respond to you.

Im doing the DM with a mix of real students and role playing certed divers. I think the real students are more of a challenge with real problems to deal with. Got a 13Y/O through OW last weekend, he was very proud! I realy enjoyed that.

Hi Dustbin, when doing your dmt internship ask whether the dive shop will limit the number of dives that you do on the course, many will limit you to a max of 60 dives - ideally you dont want any limit. It's also a good idea to ask how many people are likely to be doing a internship at the same time, oyu want as much experience as poss so if there's loads of people there doing an internship you might not get as much experience. Also, see what reaction you get from a dive shop when you ask them for info, if they are helpful and friendly in replying that is a good sign as you will be working with these people for a fairly long period of time.

If you are looking to do your instructor course after finishing oyur divemaster course it may be a good idea to do divemaster course somewhere that does the idc too as you will gt to know all the idc staff before starting your instructor course. Alternatively, you may want to do the divemaster and instructor courses in different places to get more experience of different dive sites / conditions it's upto you really.

As far as Ive seen, it's norm to pay for your course, I've only seen a few examples of companies that let oyu learn for free and then work for them for free for a period of time after. The shops that do this Ive seen were either in Cairns (Australia) or Protaras (Cyprus).

Message me if you need any details.

Dustin, there is no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to this type of training, I know, I have seen both sides of it.

Pay for the courses, and dont get stuck in a bad agreement where you work for free, YOU WILL REGRET IT.

Many of my IDC candidates earn their entire investment back within two weeks to a month here in Mexico.

Yeah I guess it is a better idea to pay for it.
Thanks for all the help.

Good advice Mark, it's good to have the choice of working with different schools if oyu want to once finishing training. Once you've done your dmt you may even decide you want to jump on a plane and go and work in a different country, or you may just want to go and work for the shop opposite the one at which you trained...
