We were diving at the Straits of Mackinaw last week. Our first dive was the William Young, 108 FFW and 46*. There was alot of current on the surface but it eased up after 20 ft. Our next dives (next day) were on the Eber Ward, 110 FFW and 46*. Again there was alot of current on the surface but it dropped off as we desended. Our last dive (two days later) was the William young again. This time there wasn't any current at the surface but the deeper we went the more the current picked up, we had to hold onto the wreck or you would get blown off her. Here is a picture I took on the William Young. I did take other pictures but they turned out like crap(it was very overcast). I do have a short video but I can't download it (says file is too large) maybe someone could let me know how to add the video.

We will be there in 3 weeks; I hope we have no surface current or wreck current; I hate working while diving. Last year, the current was very weak and that was good!

I have been diving up there for a few years now and that is the only time I have encountered currents like the ones we had this year.

Here is a short video I took while diving the Young. http://youtu.be/rqeaUvG2syQ

Even though conditions weren't perfect, it sounds like you had a good time. I love the wrecks in the straits. The wrecks are in great condition and the boat ride is next to nothing!

Yeah, would hate to have divers descend, not make it to the wreck, then have to surface with their sausage and be a target for the Mackinaw Island Ferries.... Seems I remember something like this happening before.... :D

Have fun and be safe Denny! Bring back lots of video, pictures and stories for the fall M&G. I'm looking forward to hearing all about them.

I've got that little episode on video; If I had the link, we could all enjoy it again. Got Link???

I will be planning a trip there in 2013 for a number of SB members that get together a couple times a year in various places. I have heard great things about the Straits so we are all looking forward to it. We will be coming from Ontario, NY, PA, IL, WI and possibly other areas. I will be seeking information in the future to start booking things but for now enjoy reading up on the trips others are taking.

.

We always have a good time at the Straits even when we were there in April and it snowed with a water temp of 36* from surface to depth, it's one of my favorite places to dive

Great hijack and great video. It's really wet my appetite to dive The Straits next year.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread.
