Back in '96 I was working on a liveaboard dive boat in the Bahamas. I had some time off and felt like I needed to do more diving so I flew to San Salvador in the Bahamas and had the best dive vacation at the Riding Rock Inn. The resort/boat/crew were all fantastic. We saw hammerheads every day. I dove all over the Bahamas on that liveaboard for 4 years and San Salvador is one of my favorite spots. The other favorites are only accessible by liveaboard.

Would those other places be cay sal bank? Because it was some awesome diving!
I'm thinking about setting up a trip to San Salvador through my dive shop. I've only been to Bimini and cay sal in the bahamas, how would you compare those with san salvador? Is the diving better there?

Absolutely loved Cay Sal Bank. We used to go there a few times every year and had the place to ourselves. The diving was great and we gorged ourselves on fresh lobster, fish and conch. Every night we'd go up on the top deck and watch shooting stars. We spent a lot of time in Bimini too. I'd say the diving in Sal Salvador is up there with Cay Sal and better than Bimini.
My other favorite spot was up on the White Sand Ridge of the Little Bahama Bank. We spent most of every summer there snorkelling with the wild spotted dolphins. It was magical. There are some great dives in the area and a few times we had combo dive/dolphin charters that were a blast.

My wife and I went to Grand Bahama Island in April, we did not stay at all AI so can't help there, but we dove with some wonderful people. Sunn Odyssey Divers, Nick and Karen Rolle are the owner/operators and have had this business for 20 years with a perfect safety record. they have good sized boats and take out small groups of no larger than 8. the DM Davido was very safety minded and attentive. Their prices were about the same as what we pay in Cozumel for diving and I think they are a little more reasonable than some of the other DO'S on the island.
the diving was pretty good although the weather was not cooperating, a cold front was blowing thru the east coast and dipping down to the islands so the water was kind of choppy and visability was not what the Bahamas are famous for, although it was still 70'+. we saw sharks, rays, my first dolphin in 20 years of diving, garden eels, (lots of garden eels!!!) and the coolest thing of all was for 2 dives I had 2 18" remoras swimming under me like i was a shark for the entire dives, super cool! A dive site called "Fish farm" is a VERY shallow dive but well worth it, it was just teeming with fish.
most of the terrane is a sandy bottom with large coral heads scattered about, not the color you see in Cozumel, mostly hard corals.
we got a really good rate at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Freeport thru TRAVELZOO.COM, 1/2 price normal rates at $62 a night, so we saved enough money that AI was not a consideration. The resort is very nice, it is actually 2 hotels in one. A tower on one side and a low rise grouping of buildings on the other. we stayed in the lowrise area which is call the country club side, they have a really nice pool with a bar and restaurant poolside. There is a beach pool between the 2 buildings, and another pool by the tower. They have several restaurants, a pizza place (over priced), and a casino.
our room was a standard kingsized room, nothing very fancy but clean and well maintained, they are in the process of renovating the country club side as one of the buildings was closed for construction, but there really wasn't any noise problem from it.
Nick and Karen came to the hotel every morning and picked us up and returned us to the hotel after our dives so we didn't have to pay for cabs which are very expensive in the Bahamas.
The food a the hotel was ok, but over priced, we ate a lot at the International Bazzar a shoping area created by a special effects movie guy a few years ago, there were some small restaurants with good prices and good food. There are some good restaurants in Lacaya, with a place called Pisces being the best, very good we ate there twice.
All in all we had a great time in GB, we loved the people everyone was very friendly on and off the resort, the island is beautiful, although it did get it pretty bad this summer from the hurricanes. We are looking forward to our next trip and can't wait to dive with the Rolle's again.

I'd recommend Small Hope Bay Lodge.

I started diving there - got certified there.

Nice operation, very professional, spectacular
diving, all inclusive.

When I was there, they ran three dives a day.

The first morning dive was deep, around 100 to 185
feet. The second morning dive was shallow, around
40 to 80 feet.

Lunch buffet back at the lodge.

The afternoon dive varied, depending on the morning
profile's nitrogen load. Usually it was 40 to 70 feet.

Night dives are possible, with enough interest and
divers.

The food is outstanding. The facilities are spartan but
nice. There's really not much on Andros Island except
the lodge. If you want the hustle and bustle of the
casinos, you'll have to go elsewhere. If you want a
nice, quiet gourmet dive vacation, try Small Hope.

I just got back from Nassau, dove 6 days with Stuart Cove's. By FAR the best dive operation I have ever been with. There are so many things you should know before going to Nassau, like where to eat and what to do without breaking the bank...because it is very pricey. The shark dives are truly incredible.

RICODER..those are awesome pictures you took in Nassau. I now can't wait for my trip this coming Sat. I'm so excited and hoping i'll get some good pictures...specially of the sharks. could you recommend some descent restaurants to eat at?? and do you get anything to drink eat with SC?? just want to prepare for it. thanks

I've been to Grand Bahama, Nassau and Freeeport twice. If you are going to go for the shark dive, fFreeport is the place to go otherwise I think I would choose San Salvador. Or if you go a bit farther east, some of the best diving in the Carib. is at Provo - Turks and Caicos, I would equal the diving to Little Cayman when diving with Caicos Adventures.

Daive Safe,
Caymanaic

The only thing negative I can say about Stuart Cove's is that there is no food between dives, but their shop is fully stocked with snacks.

Here's RICoder's Guide To Nassau:
1) Don't eat or drink in the hotel (crazy expensive)
2) Don't take a taxi anywhere (crazy expensive)

If you stay on Cable Beach (Wyndham or Radisson et al) you can grab a #10 bus to town for $1 per person. Everyone takes US dollars...in fact, they prefer it. On cable beach there is a place called Cafe Johnny Canoe's, go there and eat...it's great...especially on the weekend after 7 because of the Junkanoo entertainment. There's a Sbarro's pizza right there too for lunch. In town, Conchfritters is really good. Iguanna Cafe is ok, but more importantly there is an internet cafe right next to it that has the cheapest rates by far on the island. There's a place called The Poopdeck too, its really good, but pricey.

If you have time to do other stuff, I HIGHLY recomend doing the Powerboat Adventures day trip. You can get info on the island about it. It's $157 per person, but its an all day affair on a private island with food and drinks included, along with shark rangling, stingray feeding, iguana feeding, snorkling and a nature walk...not to mention the CRAZY powerboat ride. Definately worthwhile.

One last thing, find a place that does Blue Hole dives and go on one...it is supposed to be the ultimate dive.

Have fun, and dive safe.
