Hi,

Am heading to dive Port Moresby , PNG this June. Been reading from this forum and some other forums/ books / magazine etc.

Need to hear some advices from divers who had dived or been to Port Moresby or PNG . Thanks in advance for any advises.

Cheers,
Danny

you did search? Parabolic, Allison Finch are a couple divers that have been many times. We are planning a trip for June 2007 and there were many great links, advice from people that seem to know a lot. Let us know when you get back, your impressions! I have been struck by people who have dived Red Sea, Micronesia, Figi, etc saying PNG was the best. ?? got to go see!

see if that helps.

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for the link ;) . Actually after some search, found the link and was reading it. But realised that not much info on diving and staying at Port Moresby itself. So trying my luck to see if any kind divers who had dived and stay at Port Moresby itself can provide some info.

Cheers :D

Our last trip to PNG was mostly to New Britain but we organized at the end of our trip a stay at Loloata resort. Loloata is just outside of Port Moresby. They have a van that will pick you up at the airport and take you on a 15 min. ride outside of the city to a dock where you board a small boat to a island about 10 min. off shore. Loloata has some great diving in the Coral Sea. I will tell you that the viz we experienced was nowhere near the Bismark Sea. That said, the diving was very good. Loloata is the only thing (resort) on the island and you can hike all the way around the island if you wish. There are wallabies that run free on the island and at the right times you can watch sea snakes crawl ashore. The DM's were really attentive and helpful in finding marine life. The food was quite good and the room we had was very nice/with a great view.

Hi Caymaniac ,

Thanks for your information. Your photos are awesome ;) ,

DeanO2 : You mean Sin-Pom-Sin for US$1000 excluding tax or S$1000 ?
I was quoted S$1600++ excluding taxes.

Hello Danny, the diving in Moresby is very good. The water can get a bit green sometimes, but it's chock full of life. Get the Lonely Planet guide, I've found it to be pretty accurate. There are several must do sites, like Susie's Bommie, the Pacific Gas wreck-for the Flashlight fish colony-. The macro critter stuff is really good and there are plenty of bigger fish around, if you know where to look. The farther S.E. down the coast you can get Loloatta to take you, the more big stuff you'll see. I was sitting in a restaurant at lunch when a huge, locally caught Queensland Grouper was brought in. It took 4 guys to lift the thing and I was told that they bring in 1 like that each week. Happy trails, -Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your information. I will put MV pacific gas wreck on my Must dive list. Did you dive the A20 havoc WWII wreck ?

Cheers,
Danny

Hi Danny, I never got a chance to dive that wreck. I'm sure it's worth a look. I have dove around Moresby 3 times, but each time, I was only there for 2-3 days. So I didn't get to dive as many sites as I wanted. The were some great airplane wrecks I dove up North-Madang, Kavieng, Walindi, Cape Vogel-that's where most of them are. Make sure you do the Pacific Gas as a dusk dive-get in the water right before the sunset so you can see the Flashlight Fish come out of the hold. It's fantastic. -Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the information. It helps me in gathering info on dive sites in POM. Will post a trip report after i'm back. Thanks.
