Dove out of Fajardo and Palmas Del Mar last weekend which is near Humacao (Palmas). We went out of Fajardo the first day and it really was poor. Alot of rain that few days preceeding really screwed up the vis with runoff. There really is no shore diving in PR we found out on that side of the island. For that you need to go over to Rincon but that is a crapshoot this time of year because of the surf. Jan, Feb is prime surfing time over there I'm told so shore diving is kinda out. We had to go farther out of Palmas than they normally go again to get out of what they call the mud line. Sites are bit deeper up to 75-80 feet. I had a new OW student on checkouts and their were other divers still kinda green on the boat so we stayed at two sites that were 60 feet max.
These were much nicer dives that Fajardo. Vis was-80 feet. some nice coral, alot of fish, water was 81. Just a little hint of current and the guide was very good and very safe with the rest of the group. We were around or within site of him but we dove our own plan as I had smoe skills I wanted him to do and also work on his nav and situational awareness skills a little bit. We also did not have to report our air pressures and follow his time table. It's nice when instructors respect each others skills and methods and allow them to teach their class. I highly recommend Palmas Diving. You can call them at 787-863-3483. Talk to Christine. She will take good care of you.
She was the one who switched us from Fajardo to Palmas after finding out what the conditions were up there. It where they usually take new divers due to large sandy bottoms, shallow depths, good vis, and mild currents. None of which were present on saturday! Palmas near Humacao is a little deeper and therefore they normally do not do checkouts there. But after the report on my student and myself and how we handled the situation up north they felt we were safe going south and knew what we were doing. I really like that.
As for accomodations cannot comment. We stayed at the Hilton in San Juan thanks to Priceline and it was only an hour drive or so to both places depending on the route. My student did stay at the Sheraton you noted while on business the preceeding week and liked it but his GPS had fits trying to find the way to it. The road signs are pretty bad and some don;t show up on GPS units. It is up in the mountains and he was driving thru thick fog every morning he said.
