go stay at the big island. thats where the resorts are and its more suitable for those who wants more peaceful vibration. families usually go stay there.
Small island is basically party island. Music up loud till 4am. mostly backpacker chalets. But u can dive anywhere on Perhentian, regardless on which island u choose to stay. Theres also water taxis connecting the 2 islands. No roads on the island and no cars or motorcycles. Pure island living for me haha. To get from point a to b, u can choose whether to swim, get a water taxi, kayak, or go hiking. Hiking is done on small island. u can go up to the wind turbine from long beach, hiking all the way up, only to descent via an unused jetty with hundreds of steps.
There are some premium resorts in the small island, but as I said earlier, if u are fine with ****ty music blasting till 4 am, then u can choose the small island.
In terms of diving, the best sites are on the east side of the small island. If ure diving, go check up Terumbu Tiga, Sugar Wreck, and of course the Temple of the Seas. Most beaches offer good snorkelling just off the beach. Simply wake up, take your fins mask and snorkel, and walk right into good snorkelling sites. And dont forget, try the foods.

Ah lastly, the dives are cheap. Only averaging at RM90 per dive all gear included. I dont know how many that is NZ, but i guess its freaking cheap. haha cheers
