After a couple of discovery dives, I decided to go for the OW certification. I completed my open water certification at a resort in Punta Cana in late October. Now that I'm back, I've been visiting the local dive shops and asking around to decide what are my next steps. It sounds like the wreck diving off NC is worth pursuing long term so it's time to start collecting some basic equipment. Since I was certified at a resort I'm starting with nothing. I plan to get the basics from my LDS first and possibly add a 3mm wetsuit before this spring. I will probably go ahead and do a Nitrox course over the winter and aim for an an advanced open water cert. for the summer since most of the wreck diving in NC seems to be around 100ft. This stuff is addicting!

Since you are in GSO, you might want to join PDRA. Piedmont Diving Rescue Association

You have a good quarry nearby you have access 24/7 for a small yearly membership fee. It is good for training and you will meet plenty of other divers in the area.

Welcome to ScubaBoard! :)

Welcome to the board.
The best thing you can do is spend some time under water at the local quarries, get to know some local dive buddies and then do some easy entry level coastal diving with those buddies. Resort diving does not prepare you for NC diving.
