I have signed up with Aquatic Safaris for their Safari hunt dive on the Liberty Ship May 6th. This will be my first dive in NC. Anybody know how is the event has been?

Look forward to meeting new divers and a new area to dive.

Matz,

I've been working on Aquatics boats for 6 years and have worked the Safari Hunt for as many years. It is a fun event that brings 50-100 divers together to hunt for numbered tokens on the liberty ship, i think there is around 120 tokens, small orange painted steel plates and weights. Diver can find up to 3 tokens. Once back at the dock, the numbers are called in order, when your number is called you draw a prize randomly. The prizes range from a reg, BC, and a speargun to sea drops and everything in between. We cook up hot dogs and make an afternoon of it. The past two years were blown out but the prizes were still given out with everyone getting a chance to get a prize until they all ran out. We are due for a good weather for this event.

Here are a few tips,
-If you are chartering with AS get a spot near the back of the boat so you can be one of the first in the water when the horn blows.
-get to the bottom as soon a possible because 50-100 people on the wreck can stir things up a bit, bring a light.
-look everywhere, the guys put the tokens out in the open and tucked away deep in holes.
-It's easy to get lost on the wreck but with 10-20 boats anchored up it's always easy to find someones anchor line and make a safe ascent. Sometimes we have a jet ski out to tow divers back to their boats.

The water temp is usually in the mid to upper sixties so be prepared. Depth is max 50ft.

All in all it is a blast, seeing that many divers scramble underwater is pretty funny.
Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I don't know anything about the Safari, but I did dive with Aquatic Safaris a few times and they were great. One of the best I've ever used.

Hey that does sound like fun! So when does this happen? What is required so you can do this? I would like more info on this please...

It's happening May 6th. You can read all about it at the AS website, www.aquaticsafaris.com. In the left frame click on "upcoming events" then follow the Safari Hunt 2006 link. The boat is filling up quick!

Sounds like fun! It should be worth trying out! Thanks for your info.
