I'm living in Baltimore and am looking for a good place to take a Nitrox course. I've done about 40 dives & have a AOW certification, and wanted to try out what the diving around here is like. From Google I've found a few quarries & lakes that're close enough for a day trip, and I figured that getting Nitrox certified at a local shop would be a good way for me to see if I enjoy the diving in the area, and if it would be worth it for me to get my own gear.

Hi,
If you live in Baltimore, the eastern shore is just a 3 hour drive. Bag the lakes and quarries and get salty in the ocean, it's a lot bigger and so are the sharks.

If you are taking a course, a Baltimore LDS will likely have the dives in one of the quarries in Pennsylvania. For more interesting diving, Ocean City is only 3 hours away.

The "search" feature should lead you to some of the many posts on this topic. Also, look through the Mid-Atlantic Bottom Feeders" forum for other ialternatives.

What're some good local dive shops around here? The closest one that I've found is Aqua Ventures up in Cockeysville, and I was wondering if they're a good place to take a course.

I am from a dive shop in Frederick, MD. Were probably about 45 minutes away from you but we have NItrox courses and there are always people going out to dive everyweekend, if you wanted to check out some local. Where have you been diving? What quarries did you find, any you want to know about?

If you have any questions feel free to PM me. :D Hope this helps.

The shops I use are Divers Den on Harford Rd. (Parkville, Chaz and Terri are great), Aqua Ventures (Cockysville, Mike is very friendly and helpful), and Aquatic Connection in Dundalk (Owner Steve Deem is the same guy who runs Guppy Gulch, his store has odd hours but give him a call or check his site for updated store hours). All shops provide MANY courses, with flexible hours and great instruction.

Divers Den on Harford Rd is currently giving out free Nitrox course with a purchase of a nitrox dive computer. I am not sure how good they are, I have only used them to service some equipment, and I was not very impressed with either service, speed or friendliness.
