Does anybody have any recommendations for dive sites/operators in Hong Kong?

I am a california diver, so I have no problem with cold water!

Also, I may be interested in getting a friend certified while we are there.

Veek,

Actually, while the air is starting to get chilly (well for HK that is) the water isn't that cold right now...

There are a number of dive clubs here in HK as well as dive shops that run trips around Hong Kong. There's a trip this Sunday from Aberdeen that's being arranged by South China Diving Club and Hong Kong Underwater Club that have a good mix of locals and expat divers. In addition, you can check with Mandarin Divers (LDS) on training and local dive trips.

Just don't expect Palau type diving here... There isn't that much fish, visibility not so good, and the dives tend to be really shallow 10-15m or less (although there are some exceptions)...

Here are some links for the clubs/ dive shops I mentioned above:

http://mandarin-divers.com
(I've used them for training - padi rescue and IANTD adv. nitrox and strongly recommend the guys there Paul and Andrew)

browse their sites and shoot them an email.
