The dive op--Devotion to Ocean--is right at the Rex resort. I chose not to dive with an outside op as not only would diving with the on site dive shop be handy, but this dive shop got good reviews. I also emailed the shop and liked what was said as far as their diving went.
We dove 2 wrecks--Veronica and Shekem and an ocean reef dive.
I was very impressed with the sea fans and growth on the Veronica. We saw our first sea horse here. The colors were awesome on the wreck. The current on side of the boat was pretty strong, but once you got below the deck line it was o.k.
The Shekem is a boat that sank with cement bags on her. Though not as much growth on the boat, it is a cool boat with all the cement in her hold. This is a shorter dive, as the boat is deeper and there is no reef that you can then go on that is in shallower water. It is about 2 miles straight out from the dive shop.
The reef dive was a drift dive. The current was pretty good at times. The soft coral around this area is very large, and the sponges, well I have never seen so many in one place. Here is where we saw the 1 and only turtle. It was not afraid of us and we watched it for quite a while eating.
There are no large fish around, lots and lots of juvenile fish. We did see a lobster and moray eel, though smaller. There are schools of fish to be seen, just nothing even as large as a French Angel.
The dive briefs were good. When going on the wrecks, they were probably the best briefs we have ever had.
The staff is very friendly and bends over backward to please you.
We brought our own gear, the gear there looked in good shape.
For the six dives we paid $340 U.S.
We stayed at the Rex. It is a 'tired' resort, but the food was very good. The drinks, they were o.k. We did the all inclusive.
Would I go back to the Rex? Probably not. The prices were not bad when Sunwing and Air Canada went, but with Sunwing pulling out, the prices went through the roof, and for what you get at the Rex, no probably not.
I would though come back for the diving. It was good and different.
