Any recommendations as to which land based dive shop to use while I'm in Puerto Ayora. I'll be there for a week at the end of November. Is $200 the standard price for a day dive?

HI Wesley,
There are several dive shops in Puerto Ayora. Be sure to check their authenticity: some shops nowadays don´t have the correct National Park LIcensing. I would recommend Scuba Iguana for day dives. They have been around for a long time and run a pretty good operation. Approximately 180$ is the going rate for two dives with snacks and lunch. SOmetimes they´ll do "last minute" if you pop in the night before at closing. You might be able to get 10 $ off or so. Have a great time.

Or cut a deal for multiple dives. The lunches are very nice, but you may rather have the local fare that the DM's will have packed for them. The DM's will very happily trade their lunch for yours. :cool2:

Hi Wesley. I second Scuba Iguana. They do charge $200 per day for a 2 tank dive which includes equipment, transportation and lunch/snacks. There are only 5 legal operators in Puerto Ayora and probably double that in illegal operations. The illegal operations normally charge less money, however, usually have to leave at 05:00 AM in order to get away from either the port or the canal before the National Park Rangers are on duty which diminishes the risk of being sent back for lack of permit. The other legal operators are Nautidiving ($350 per day for a 2 tank dive without equipment), Eclipse ($250 a day w/out equipment) Silberstein (good operations but difficult communications unless you're there) and SubAqua (not sure if they're operational again after being suspended post accident or not). Also, the legal operations work on an itinerary. The illegals sort of go where business dictates.

Hi Wesley,
I agree with the other posts and suggest that you go to Scuba Iguana. If you don't have camera equipment with you they are also good at producing a CD with photos and video taken during the dive(s) which they sell at eminently reasonable prices. I dived with them in June at Gordon Rock and had one of the best dives of my (admittedly fairly inexperienced) career. I don't think I paid as much as $200. Have a great time, I wish I were coming too!
