Diving in Dominican Republic- Is it good? Where is best?

I am considering taking part in a mission trip to the DR in June. I was wondering if any of you guys have had dive experience there, and can recommend it, or advise me to skip it. The trip flies into Puerto Plata, and drives to Santo Domingo after a few days. I am a little fuzzy right now on whether they fly out of SD, or back out of Puerto Plata. It was my idea to take my gear, stay behind a few days after they leave, and DIVE, baby.

Years ago before I was certified, I snorkeled from Boca Chica, but I really don't have any info to say what the diving is like in the DR, or what areas or dive ops are better than any others.
