anyone have any thoughts? Looks like a beutiful island, curious on the quality of diving there? Any reccomendations?

I have been there many yeas ago. Diving is good (nothing fantastic). Nature walks are good too but you need to be in really good shape.

Note that when I went diving with a group there several years ago, most resorts catered to European clients and diving wasn't on the top of their list of things to do.

For me, there are many other dive destination choices and thus I don't think that I'll ever go back.

So far we have been to Belize (2x), Cozumel (2x), Bonaire (2x), Key Largo (2x), Grand Cayman, Curacao, Akumal MX and Dominica. Dominica was probably our favorite trip. Maybe not as many fish as Bonaire or Cozumel but still plenty of fish. We saw 2 - 4 spotted eels and 2 -4 spotted drums on every dive for instance. We had the best turtle experience of all diving trips when a young one decided to hang out with our group for 15 minutes literally swimming right up to all five of us to check each of us out.

We dived with Nature Island Dive and thought they were great.

As good as the diving is the topside is absolutely fantastic. If you want big luxury resorts, wide white sand beaches and lots of great restaurants then you should go somewhere else because you won't find any of that in Dominica. The only American thing we saw were two KFC's, everything else, stores, hotels, and restaurants were small locally owned businesses. But if you want unspoiled nature then Dominica is the place, the jungle and waterfalls are great.

We would love to go back, but it isn't the easiest place to get to and you really need 10 -14 days, 6 for diving and 4+ for topside to really see it.

Here is a trip report I put together. Diverrex.com

I'd go to St. Vincent long before I'd go back to Dominica. Much better -in fact superior- U/W marine life with better water conditions in addition to all of the topside nature things to do. Better choices for accommodation.

The only memorable thing about Dominica is the taste of fruit there especially the bananas. Fruit there has very special awesome taste. Lemonade and grapefruit juices are out of this world I must admit.

Dominica was fantastic all around for me. I have been twice and would go back in heart beat.

We just got back from 10 days there. It was our second visit. Dived with Nature Island Dive in Soufriere. The diving was great and the non diving activities are equally good. It called the Nature Island of the Carribean and it lives up to it`s name.

The people are very friendly although too many of them ask for money but they are polite when you say no. Everyone on the island is very welcoming and seemed happy to have tourists visit their island.

The numbers of fish aren`t as much as some other places we`ve been but the variety of fish and other creatures is good. The color and variety of the coral and sponges is as good or better then most places we`ve been. I saw lot`s of stuff I hadn`t seen before.

The diving with Nature Island Dive is pretty relaxed and everyone there is very friendly and accommodating.

The island is more difficult to get to than some other places but that`s what keeps it from being too commercial and crowded. It is definitely worth the effort though.

Here is a link to some of the pictures from our trip.

Nice photos. I think you're right, the quantity of fish is not as much as some other places, but the variety you see is very interesting. I'd love to go back and plan to sometime.

Did you dive with Tony?

We've dove with Tony and Oscar mostly. Weefy was sick but we did get the last day with him. They are all great DMs each with their own style and they're all good at finding interesting stuff. Of course Vivian (Rock Hind) did a great job captaining the boat.

One of the things we liked about Nature Island Dive is that all the staff are from Dominica and they really want to show you the best their island has to offer.

Unfortunately we flooded 2 Canon G9s and the dive that we saw the large yellow seahorse and the school of reef squid was the dive that I forgot to reinstall the SD card. Fortunately we had one spare G9 between us so for most of the week we shared the spare camera.

I managed to get 2 on ebay so we'll be back in business for Roatan and Utila in March.

I forgot to mention that if you want some great reasonably priced food Weefy does barbecues several times a week across the road from Nature Island Dive in Soufriere.

Contrary to some others we really enjoyed the food in Dominica and thought it was very economical but it probably depends on what you are expecting. We prefer to eat at the local restaurants or even pickup some barbecued chicken at one of the road side barbecues. EC$5 or EC$6 gets a large drumstick with thigh attached.

Fresh fish or barbecued chicken with provisions and salad was usually EC$10-EC$15 for lunch and between EC$15 and EC$30 for dinner.

If you want to do nothing but dive go to Bonaire but if want great diving plus a genuine island experience in nature's paradise go to Dominica.
