Off the Belize Coast Town of Dangriga is an atoll called South Water Caye, right on the reef. It hosts one resort - The Blue Marlin Lodge. The Blue Marlin holds a max of 30 guests. All diving is done right on the reefs around the atoll - maximum 5 minute boat ride. You can make arrangements for a day trip (with picnic)out to Glover's Reef from the Blue Marlin.
I've been here a dozen times (I hate the place?). This is the only place in the world where I personally have seen Whale Sharks (twice), and I've dove all over - from the Red Sea all the way across to the Western edges of the Pacific. Usually excellent opportunities for turtles, nurse sharks, sting and eagle rays, eels, octopus, squid at night, and the usual list of colorful caribbean reef fish.
This year, two of the gals in our group decided to go deep sea fishing one afternoon instead of diving - for a change they said. They caught a 9 foot, 300 pound blue marlin. It took an hour and a half to bring it in. They have the pix to prove it.
It's a bit of haul from Belize City, unless you take a prop commuter flight down to Dangriga (15 mins). Resort personnel will pick you up there for the boat ride out to the atoll.
The Blue Marlin doesn't dive the famous Blue Hole. But really, you aren't missing anything. I dove the hole. There is nothing there.
